Last week we had the pleasure of celebrating a very special achievement! 🎉🐾

Congratulations to Danielle on being accepted into Veterinary Medicine School after years of hard work, dedication, and volunteering. We’ve loved having her as part of the Chappelle Veterinary Clinic family and are so proud to see her achieve this goal.

We celebrated together as a team and gave her a special gift to remind her that we’ll always be cheering her on and supporting her journey.

Today we celebrated an incredible team member and friend, Lana, as she starts a new chapter in her journey. ❤️

Since day one, Lana has been a huge part of the Chappelle Veterinary Clinic family. Her leadership, kindness, sense of humor, and caring personality have left a lasting impact on our team, our clients, and so many pets over the years.

We spent the day celebrating with lots of laughs, great memories, and all of Lana’s favorite foods… except green peppers 😅 — so of course we made sure she still got some to take home, just in different colours and made of plastic! 🌶️

Lana, thank you for everything you have done for our clinic and for all the wonderful moments we shared together. You will truly be missed, but we are so excited for you and wish you nothing but happiness and success in your new journey.

STRYCHNINE ALERT 🚨

Attention veterinarians and pet owners across Alberta & Saskatchewan:

Emergency permission has been granted for the use of 2% strychnine to control Richardson ground squirrels. While intended for below-ground placement, this substance is highly toxic to companion animals.

⚠️ How exposure can happen:
• Direct ingestion of bait
• Secondary ingestion (eating poisoned wildlife)

🐾 Clinical signs to watch for:
• Rapid onset (typically within 10–120 minutes)
• Early signs: nervousness, tenseness, stiffness
• “Sawhorse” stance (rigid, splayed limbs)
• Severe tetanic seizures (may be triggered by touch, sound, or light)
• Breathing may pause during seizure episodes
• Vomiting (less common)
• Decreasing relaxation between seizures as toxicity progresses

🔎 Clinical takeaway:
If you see a rapid progression with extensor rigidity and seizure activity, keep strychnine toxicity high on your differential list—especially if exposure to bait or wildlife is possible.

📣 For pet owners:
If you suspect exposure, contact your veterinarian immediately.
❗ Do NOT induce vomiting at home without veterinary guidance.
