📣 APEX K9 ACADEMY – GROUP CLASS RULES & GUIDELINES 📣

To keep our training space safe, respectful, and effective for everyone—dogs, handlers, and families—we ask that all participants follow these rules during group classes, regardless of environment:

🔸 NO SMOKING – Not in class, not on the field, not in vehicles near the training area
🔸 NO ALCOHOL – Zero tolerance
🔸 NO FOOD – Please do not bring snacks or meals into the training area
🔸 NO INAPPROPRIATE CLOTHING – You must be dressed for real-world dog work. That means:
• No revealing or overly tight clothing
• No low-cut tops, short shorts, crop tops, or loose accessories
• Clothing should be modest, durable, and functional
• Expect potential scratches, dirt, or rough handling—dress accordingly
• Closed-toe footwear only – no sandals, flip-flops, or flimsy shoes

🔸 PAY ATTENTION – This is not social hour. Stay focused. Every second counts for you and your dog
🔸 NO OVER-TALKING – Listen when others are working. Respect the time and energy everyone is investing
🔸 FAMILY & CHILDREN – Are welcome, but must remain calm, quiet, and supervised at all times. No approaching other dogs without permission
🔸 NO EXCUSES – Bring effort, not ego

⚠️ Heads up: Our training is real. So is our tone. You may hear strong language. We mean no offense—we're committed to giving you and your dog what you need, not sugarcoated words

The Hidden Problem with Treats, Lures, and Baiting

On the surface, using treats to train seems harmless — even helpful. But over time, it creates unwanted stimulation in the dog’s mind and body, which leads to bigger behavioral issues.

Here’s how:

1. Reward-Driven Hype

Food is a powerful stimulant. When a dog becomes conditioned to expect a treat for every action, it begins to enter a heightened, excited state just from anticipation. That excitement may look like enthusiasm — but it’s really a form of mental overdrive.

This creates dogs who are:

Hyper-focused on food instead of the handler

Easily frustrated when rewards aren’t delivered fast enough

Quick to act, slow to think

Over time, that stimulation builds anxiety, impulsiveness, and a need for constant gratification — the exact opposite of calm control.

2. Teaches Bribery, Not Discipline

Luring teaches the dog to perform for a visible reward. But that means the dog is always making a cost-benefit decision:
“Is it worth it right now?”
If the treat isn’t good enough — or the distraction is too strong — the dog will ignore the command.

That creates inconsistent behavior, because the dog obeys only when it feels like it. It’s not responding out of trust or respect — it’s negotiating.

A dog trained with treats learns to look outside itself for guidance and satisfaction. That creates:

A constant search for reward

Poor focus on the handler

An inability to self-regulate behavior when no reward is present

Dogs like this often fail in real-life environments, where distractions are everywhere and food isn’t guaranteed.

4. Triggers Food Obsession and Anxiety

When a dog associates food with success, affection, and praise, it can become food-obsessed. This shows up as:

Begging

Drooling when commands are given

Anxious whining or pawing for treats

Refusing to work unless a treat is visible

What started as “positive reinforcement” now becomes a trigger for stress and unwanted attention-seeking behavior.
