As the concern grows in the area for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, we wanted to provide you with some trusted information!
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is transmitted by the American Dog Tick. Not ALL American Dog Ticks have the disease, just like not EVERY Deer Tick carries Lyme disease.
If your dog has recently been bitten by a tick (even if you are unsure of the type), monitor them for the following symptoms:
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Anorexia
• Lameness or joint pain
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea
• Abdominal pain
• Swollen lymph nodes
• Neurological signs
• Petechiae (multiple bruises, often seen on the gums and the inner surface of the lips)
If caught promptly, the disease can be managed.
There have been several dogs in Ontario that have tested positive for RMSF now, some of which have recently visited Long Point, Ontario. RMSF can also affect humans so please be mindful if you have recently been bitten as well.
If you have any concerns and/or questions about how to keep your dogs safe, please reach out to us!
