As many of you know, tick season has arrived in Alberta, and some of our clients have already found ticks on their pets. While we are always happy to assist with safe tick removal, tick submissions for identification should be completed by the pet owner, as you will have the necessary information required for the submission process.

If you discover a tick on your pet, prompt removal is important. We encourage pet owners to familiarize themselves with proper tick removal techniques and submission guidelines. The following resource provides helpful information on safely removing ticks and submitting them for identification:

As always, if you have any questions about tick prevention or concerns about your pet, please contact our clinic — we’re here to help! 🩺

To our valued clients, recent federal approval has permitted the temporary emergency use of Strychnine pesticide in parts of Alberta and Saskatchewan to control Richardson ground squirrel populations, following reports of multi-million dollar agricultural damage caused by increased gopher populations. Currently, this authorization is time limited until November 2027 and includes specific geographic restrictions, training requirements, and carcass monitoring measures intended to reduce environmental risk.

While we recognize the significant challenges that agriculture producers face, strychnine is an extremely toxic poison that poses serious risks to pets, wildlife and scavenging animals. Animals can be exposed either by ingesting bait directly or by consuming poisoned rodents, which can lead to secondary poisoning of dogs, cats, birds of prey, coyotes, foxes and other wildlife.

Below is an information poster for pet owners with more information regarding strychnine toxicity!

Happy Friday everyone! Meet Chunk, a truly sweet little chihuahua with a big love for attention. She thrives on connection and isn’t shy about letting us know when she wants to be close, often vocalizing from her kennel until she’s comforted.

Thanks to a thoughtful idea from one of our technologists, Hailey, we introduced a cozy baby wrap for Chunk. With the help of Kayla our VTA, who gave it a try, Chunk quickly settled in, feeling safe and secure. She loved it so much that she peacefully drifted off to sleep while being held close.

Moments like these highlight the importance of compassionate, individualized care and finding creative ways to ensure every patient feels comfortable and loved!
