Sometimes the best thing you can do for an established aquarium is interfere a little less and trust the ecosystem a little more.

As plants mature, fish settle into their routines, and the tank finds its balance, you start realizing it may know what it needs better than you think.

Here are 5 more signs your fish may be sick. Some warning signs are obvious, while others can be easy to miss until you know what to watch for.

The sooner you notice a change in behaviour or appearance, the sooner you can figure out what may be going on.

Sometimes the first signs of illness in fish are subtle. Changes in behaviour, appetite, breathing, appearance, or swimming can all be clues that something isn’t quite right.

Here are 5 signs your fish may be sick — Part 1.

Baby pleco update!

Dad is still doing great in the river tank, and the babies have now moved from quarantine into their 10-gallon grow-out tank.

We’ve sadly lost two, but the rest are thriving, eating well, and growing fast. They even demolished their cucumber overnight.

Hopefully they’ll be ready for the next stage of their journeys soon — because we already have some new plans for this 10-gallon.

Our little micropond is really settling in.

The black-eyed Susans are surrounding the pond now, the red root floaters have multiplied like crazy, and the vallisneria is growing beautifully. We only spotted a couple of minnows in the daylight, but at night we usually see many more cruising around.

The pump needs a little unclogging, but otherwise this tiny ecosystem is looking great.

The minnows seem pretty happy in their little paradise.

A planted aquarium can actually outgrow itself. 🌿 As plants spread, floaters multiply, and roots take over, they can start blocking light, restricting swimming space, and changing the flow of the tank.

Sometimes healthy plant growth still needs a little maintenance to keep the aquarium balanced.

This community tank took some trial and error.

We recently had to remove our Glo tetras after the chasing and nipping became too much, and one female gourami also had to be rehomed after repeated fighting.

Since then, the remaining fish have settled into a much calmer rhythm — gouramis, mollies, an apistogramma, penguin tetras, cory cats, otos, a bristlenose and more.

Now we’re considering one final peaceful showcase fish.

What would you add — or would you leave the tank exactly as it is?

We thought the snail population was the problem…but it turned out the snails were just showing us what was really happening.

Extra feeding for the fry meant more leftover food in the tank, which gave the snails more to eat — and suddenly we were seeing a lot more of them.

Sometimes the thing you notice first isn’t actually the problem. It’s the clue.

Chasing doesn’t always mean your fish are fighting — but sometimes it’s the first sign that something in the social balance of the tank is changing.

Territory, hierarchy, breeding behaviour, and competition can all play a role. The key is watching whether one fish is constantly being targeted, hiding, or unable to get away.

Ever clean your aquarium and wonder why it suddenly looks worse?

Maintenance can stir up debris trapped in the substrate, behind rocks, and around decor, leaving the water cloudy for a while afterward.

Sometimes the messiest-looking part is simply the middle of the cleaning process.
