Dog Sport Friday - Obedience

Obedience under Dogs Australia isn’t just heeling.

It’s distance, direction, discrimination, control, problem-solving, and teamwork — all working together through a wide variety of exercises.

Across this Dogsport Friday series, we’ve shared some of the foundations behind the sport:
focus, positions, engagement, movement, clarity, and understanding.

Because in obedience, precision isn’t built through pressure.
It’s built through clear communication, thoughtful training, and skills layered one piece at a time.

From working at distance…
to independent scent and seekback work…
to maintaining connection and accuracy under pressure…

This is what obedience can become.

Thank you for following along with our obedience series 🐾

Congratulations Zoe & Sue!

A huge congratulations to Zoe and Sue who competed at the Golden Retriever Club trial over the weekend and what an incredible effort across multiple disciplines!

From RATG retrieving, Rally Obedience, Obedience and Tricks, this versatile team did it all, even qualifying for the prestigious Winner of Winners ring.

Coming home with two qualifying cards, plus 1st place in Novice Obedience and 3rd place in Tricks an outstanding achievement!

We love seeing teams showcase such adaptability, teamwork and dedication across a range of dog sports. Super proud of you both!

Happy Birthday Pippi 11 today ❤️ looking forward to plenty more.

🐾 Dogsport Friday – Obedience Foundations

This week: Position Changes

We’ve already talked about position — where the dog is.

Now we’re looking at how they move between positions.

✔ Sit → Drop
✔ Drop → Stand
✔ Stand → Sit

In Dogs Australia obedience, position changes are judged on clarity, accuracy and control.

But we don’t build that through pressure.

At Animal Talent, we focus on:
• Understanding before speed
• Clarity before duration
• Accuracy without tension

Because great position changes aren’t rushed.

They’re thoughtful.
Deliberate.
Understood.
Practiced.

A few keen beans hit the road and headed to Glenreagh for 3 days of agility fun 🐾

What a weekend! Our golden dog award goes to Ripley quite possibly the keenest little Corgi there ever was smashing it with 7 first places, including 3 Novice Jumping qualifiers, earning her promotion to Excellent Jumping all in one weekend!

The rest of us had plenty of brilliant moments too (mixed in with a few bars down, the occasional “oops wrong jump,” and some creative course choices when brakes were optional ). But that’s all part of the game learning, laughing, and building those partnerships.

We are heading home tired, proud, and full of great memories from a fantastic camping weekend.

Thanks to everyone for being such good sports and for the awesome teamwork on display

So many happy dogs having an absolute blast at our Dog Sport Retrieving Workshop!

It was fantastic to watch these teams learning together, building skills, confidence, and a real love for the game. There’s nothing better than seeing dogs doing what they’re bred to do with enthusiasm and joy.

We’re hoping this is just the beginning, with many more workshops to come and plenty of keen retrievers discovering just how much fun retrieving sports can be!

Thanks Sue for sharing your knowledge and helping our newbie teams.

Dr Findy—a NSW-based veterinarian and clinical animal behaviourist with a particular focus on dog–human relationship research, is involved in a project called "The Caregiver's Compass"

The project consists of an anonymous multiple-choice survey online . The survey takes approximately 10 minutes for most participants and is open to any adult who is currently caring for a dog. It does feel long BUT most participants find it quite insightful in reflecting on their relationship with their dog.

The project explores how an owner’s feelings within their relationship with their dog can help guide when to seek professional support.

This work is ultimately about strengthening outcomes for both dogs and their caregivers.

We'd love it if you could spare some time to complete the survey.

I think it takes a special kind of courage and a whole lot of trust in your partnership to compete at the Easter Show 🎡🐾

From the drive to Sydney, to navigating a loaded trolley through crowds and carnival rides, to stepping into an environment that is almost impossible to truly prepare for… the nerves, the noise, the smells it’s a lot. And then we ask our dogs to trust us, to walk into a ring unlike anything they’ve experienced, and remember everything we’ve trained.

If you’re lucky, the ground stays quiet, the rides don’t fill the air with screams, and for a moment the world feels still… but more often than not, it’s anything but 😅

It takes practice to steady yourself, support your dog, breathe, and focus. And when it all comes together even just in moments it’s worth it.

For Snazzy and I, it wasn’t a flawless performance. There were hiccups and we lost points, but we kept going. And in amongst it all, there were some truly lovely moments ✨

That’s what dog sports is all about celebrating the highs, learning from the lows, and keeping it all in perspective.

We are incredibly proud to have represented our breed on the day and to come away with a 2nd place in UD at the Royal 🏆

Thank you to everyone who supports us behind the scenes, and a special shoutout to Courtney Harding our Sydney Royal organiser, trolley puller, and all-round minder we couldn’t do it without you ❤️

Early start yesterday as we headed off to the Sydney Royal to compete 🎡🐾

Anyone who has ever been to the Sydney Royal Easter Show knows just how overwhelming the environment can be for humans, let alone our dogs! Yesterday was all about obedience and rally, and it was fantastic to see the increased entry numbers this year 👏

Huge congratulations to Penny Dalziel and Zypperty, who made history taking out Best in Trial for the 6th consecutive year 🏆 what an incredible achievement!

And to Sandy and Darcy another exceptional team congratulations on your UD win 🙌

To our Team Unleashed crew… it takes courage, solid preparation, and a little bit of luck to step into a Sydney Royal ring filled with distractions like wood chopping, a haunted house, carnival rides, and plenty of well-meaning public wanting to pat your dog 😅

But we did it 💪

Now we take the experience, the lessons learned, and start building towards next year… after we’ve all had a well-earned rest 🐶✨
