🌟 Gorgeous the Kelpie – A Story of Teamwork, Love, and Round-the-Clock Care 🌟

Meet Gorgeous, a beautiful Kelpie mum who has shown us all just how strong and resilient she is. 💖

Throughout her pregnancy, Gorgeous was closely monitored in hospital—regular check-ups, X-rays, and ultrasounds ensured we were doing everything possible to keep her and her puppies safe. But just as her due date approached, complications struck. Her uterus twisted, cutting off the blood supply to her puppies, and we had to act fast.

🚨 Emergency surgery began immediately—and thanks to the incredible coordination of our veterinarians, nurses, animal attendants, and admin team, we were able to save six precious puppies, despite the blood supply having been compromised at such a critical stage in their development. This truly was an incredible team success.

And we must mention—our very own Dr. Alex has a soft spot for Kelpies, which made this case all the more close to her heart. 💕 Her dedication, alongside the skill and compassion of the entire hospital team, was instrumental in getting these little lives safely into the world.

For the next few days, Gorgeous stayed in our 24-hour hospital, receiving continuous monitoring and care. Having access to around-the-clock attention meant every little change in her or her puppies’ condition could be responded to straight away—something that was absolutely crucial in their recovery.

While our hospital team worked tirelessly day and night, Gorgeous’ fur parents were there every single day, showering her with love, checking on the puppies, and making sure she never felt alone. 🐾💞

Thanks to this mammoth team effort—from the surgery team to the hospital nurses, animal attendants, and the loving commitment of her family—Gorgeous and her six little ones are now well on their way to making a full recovery. 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶

✨ Stories like this remind us how powerful 24-hour veterinary care can be, and how much can be achieved when a community of care comes together for our patients.

Let’s hear it for Gorgeous, her puppies, her amazing family, and the incredible team who made this happy ending possible. 💕

🚨 Introducing: The Cool Case Club 🚨

At Lake Road Vet, we believe in sharing knowledge, building skills, and inspiring the next generation of veterinary professionals. That’s why we created the Cool Case Club 🩺✨.

This voluntary program gives veterinary students the chance to be part of the action whenever we have an interesting case or surgery. From assisting with caesareans and ICU patients, to learning how to place catheters, support anesthesia, or even scrub in for major surgeries — students get hands-on experience while helping our team care for patients. 🐾💙

📣 Here’s how it works:
👉 When a fascinating case comes in, we let our Cool Case Club members know.
👉 If they’re available, they can come in, volunteer, and lend a hand.
👉 They gain valuable real-world skills, and our patients benefit from the extra care.

We are currently at capacity for work placement students, but we still want to ensure that our VET students don’t miss out on valuable learning opportunities. 💡 The Cool Case Club allows us to share these experiences, while also contributing to the betterment of the profession — something we are deeply committed to.

At the end of the day, it’s all about teamwork, education, and providing the very best care for our patients, while supporting the vets of tomorrow. 🌟

☀️🐾 An Important Reminder as the Weather Warms Up 🐾☀️

Here in Wagga, we have a big stray cat population at the best of times—but as the warmer months arrive, cats will begin coming on heat, and the number of unwanted litters will quickly rise.

This little girl—now known as Miss Marmalade—is a perfect example of why desexing is so important. She wandered onto a farm as a semi-feral youngster, and it soon became clear she was heavily pregnant. She went on to give birth to six beautiful kittens.

It took a mammoth effort to safely trap her, tame her, and give her the care she needed. She is one of the lucky ones—rehabilitated, loved, fully insured to ensure the best quality of care, and now living her best life with her new family 💛 Her kittens have all been weaned, desexed, vaccinated, and adopted into loving homes too.

But not every cat gets that chance. Desexing is the most effective way to prevent suffering, reduce the stray population, and ensure every cat and kitten has the best chance at a happy, healthy life.

💙 If you’ve recently adopted a cat or kitten, please make sure they are desexed. And if you need help booking, or have questions about the process, our team is here to help—just reach out.

Let’s work together to make stories like Miss Marmalade’s the rule, not the exception 🐾

🌟 Celebrating Excellence in Leadership 🌟

Once a year, we gather for our Annual Awards Night—a chance to recognise the incredible team members who go above and beyond at Lake Road Vet. 💙

We were so proud to present the John Peverell Prize—awarded for diligent, respectful, and aspirational leadership—to Dr. Sara 🏆🐾

Dr. Sara’s dedication to the team shines in everything she does. Even during her recent maternity leave after welcoming her beautiful baby Elsie, she continued to support her colleagues—offering guidance on cases, checking in, and staying connected around the clock. We’ve also had the joy of little Elsie joining us for clinical rounds and vet meetings, reminding us all how special it is to work in a truly family-friendly environment. 👶💛

At Lake Road Vet, we believe in celebrating not just professional achievements, but also the people behind them. We’re proud to create a workplace where mums feel supported in returning to work, where team members feel valued, and where family—fur and human—is always welcome.

💙 Congratulations, Dr. Sara—you’re an inspiration to us all!

💛 Gratitude Post - Feeling the Love 💛

At Lake Road Vet, we have the privilege of caring for some truly remarkable patients—and equally remarkable fur parents. One of those is the incredible mum of Charlie, a brave cancer survivor who completed many rounds of chemotherapy with us 🐾🎗️.

After countless visits to the hospital for Charlie and her other fur babies, she wanted to thank our care team in the most thoughtful way—by treating us to a special paint & sip night at the Little Yellow House Gallery and Studio on Murray Street. 🎨🍷

It was such a gift to step away from the hustle and bustle of clinical life and spend an evening together laughing, creating, sharing food, and simply enjoying each other’s company.

We are so grateful for her kindness, generosity, and trust in us—not just as clients, but as cherished members of our LRV family. 💙

If you’re looking for a wonderful local experience, we can’t recommend the Little Yellow House Gallery and Studio enough! Perfect for team rewards, corporate events, or a fun night with friends—and they also offer fantastic after-school programs for kids.

From the bottom of our hearts—thank you for reminding us how special our community truly is. 🐾

🌟 Opening Doors for Future Vet Stars 🌟

At Lake Road Veterinary Hospital, we’re passionate about creating opportunities for young people in our community to explore a career in animal care. 🐾💛

Our junior “Hot Lapper” program is an incredible entry-level role for school-aged teens—often their very first job! These young team members help keep our hospital running smoothly, learn about the veterinary industry from the inside, and develop skills that will serve them for life.

When we welcomed our very first intake, we hired 18 amazing juniors… and every single one stayed with us for more than 12 months 🙌 That’s a huge achievement in resilience, commitment, and teamwork.

Many of our Hot Lappers have gone on to leadership roles, veterinary traineeships, and even university studies in medicine and veterinary science. We couldn’t be prouder to see them grow and succeed.

💙 And a special shoutout to Mia and Sophie, who have just completed their next level of training—allowing them to take on longer animal attendant shifts. Congratulations on this exciting step in your journey! 👏🐶🐱

To all our past, present, and future Hot Lappers—thank you for bringing your energy, care, and heart to Lake Road Vet. You’re the future of animal care, and we’re honoured to be part of your journey.

💙 Chewbacca – The Luckiest Dog of the Year 💙

Meet Chewbacca—without a doubt, the sickest patient we’ve treated this year… and one of the luckiest. 🐾💪

While his mum was overseas, Chewbacca became critically unwell. He spent two weeks in ICU and nearly three weeks in hospital battling severe electrolyte issues that pushed our entire team to the limit. In fact, his condition used every vial of a critical medication we had on hand. Late one evening, when we realised he would need even more, our friends at Wagga Wagga Vet Hospital stepped in. They kindly lent us extra medication so Chewbacca could continue life-saving treatment without delay. 🌟

This is the kind of collaboration that happens between veterinary practices when there’s an emergency—because at the end of the day, it’s all about the patient’s life. 🐶💛

We also have to highlight something incredibly important: Chewbacca was insured. This meant his mum could say “yes” to every single treatment he needed without hesitation—giving him the best possible chance at survival. For critically ill patients, pet insurance can be the difference between hope and heartbreak.

Today, Chewbacca is home, happy, and fully recovered—a living reminder of what’s possible when teamwork, medical expertise, and preparedness come together. 🐾💙

A massive thank you to Wagga Wagga Vet Hospital for their generosity, and to Chewbacca’s mum for making the decision to insure him. It truly saved his life.

Sometimes, love comes in the form of late-night sacrifices… and sometimes, it comes in the form of a handmade blanket. 💛🐾

💛 A Blanket Full of Love 💛

You may have noticed Dr. Alex hasn’t been in the hospital as much lately—she’s been on maternity leave, spending precious time with her beautiful baby boy, Paddy. 👶💐

This week, one of our most cherished clients, Elaine, surprised us with something truly special—a handmade blanket for Paddy, crafted with so much love. 🧶💛

Elaine is the mum of one of our favourite patients, sweet little Boots and now Kiko 🐾✨. Boots bravely fought cancer twice but sadly crossed the rainbow bridge 🌈💔. Even though he’s no longer with us, his family is still part of our Lake Road Vet family. That connection, that shared care, doesn’t end when the visits do.

Gestures like this remind us of something important—being a vet is more than just a career. It’s a calling. Our team makes enormous sacrifices, often missing precious moments with our own families, to be there for yours—day and night, 24/7. Sometimes that means little Paddy goes without mum for the night, so that another fur family can have more tomorrows together.

Massive thanks to Elaine for this incredible handmade blanket, and for reminding us why we do what we do. Your kindness wraps around us—just like Paddy will be wrapped in this blanket—and makes every late-night emergency, every difficult moment, worth it. 💛🐾

🐾 Celebrating 4 Years of Kate – Our Veterinary Nurse Practitioner Superstar! 🐾

Four years ago, we welcomed a bright, compassionate, and incredibly skilled professional into the Lake Road Vet family – Kate, our very own Veterinary Nurse Practitioner. 🌟

Kate isn’t “just” a nurse (though that title alone carries enormous value). She is one of the highest qualified, registered, and accredited veterinary technologists, technicians, and nurses in all of Australia – a rare achievement that speaks volumes about her dedication to our patients.

💡 What does that mean for your fur family?

Kate holds professional registrations with both the RVN (Registered Veterinary Nurse) and ACN (Accredited Veterinary Nurse) programs. These aren’t just letters after a name – they’re commitments to:
✅ Ongoing professional development and education
✅ Meeting rigorous national standards in patient care
✅ Upholding ethics and welfare at the highest level

Veterinary nurses like Kate are your pet’s frontline healthcare heroes. Here are just some of the many ways they make a difference every single day:
🔹 Triage cases to ensure urgent patients get help right away
🔹 Work through diagnostics – from blood tests to imaging – to help guide the vet’s decisions
🔹 Assist with patient referrals and transfers, ensuring continuity of care between hospitals
🔹 Train and mentor junior nurses, building the next generation of compassionate caregivers
🔹 Monitor anaesthesia, provide post-surgery care, and offer nutritional guidance
🔹 Comfort patients when they’re feeling unsure or scared

Kate does all this with warmth, humility, and a genuine love for animals that can’t be taught – it’s simply who she is. 💖

Today, we celebrate 4 amazing years of Kate’s service at Lake Road Vet and the countless patients (and fur parents) whose lives she’s touched along the way. We are so incredibly lucky to have her on our team – and so are your fur families. 🐶🐱

Drop a 🐾 in the comments to help us congratulate Kate on this milestone and thank her for everything she does!

Lake Road Veterinary Clinic Christmas Party

At the end of each year Lake Rd Vet loves to share the Christmas spirit with the clients and community who make up the Lake Rd Vet Family. This has been a tradition for the last five years and is looked forward to by all our staff and junior family members.

Santa is a big focus for all our fur babies who can’t wait to whisper in his ear, give him a big slurpy kiss and have their photo taken with him.

There are lots of fur baby competitions like best dressed and most Christmassy pet. The younger pet owners enjoy the jumping castle and face painting.

The sausage sizzle is popular and you can still buy baubles for the giving tree. Profits from these activities benefit local rescue groups.
