It’s taken a very long time but the latest pond has finally been placed in the ground. The hole was dug by pick & shovel & measures 2.6 Metre by 2.3 Metre by 1 Metre deep. Now up to the task of back filling & preparing for Spring to give our latest Turtle arrivals a new home! 🐢🐢🐢

Now that’s one huge turtle!

Please put your shells together to welcome our last member of the Turtle Team—Abby!! 🎉🙌🐢

Abby is also a student at Penn State and alongside Sarah and Jeff is braving the heat this summer studying our terrific turtle friends in the Delaware River. More specifically, Abby is leading the charge on visual turtle surveys, while the other turtle team members focus on turtles they catch and find in the river. 🐢🔎

Abby demonstrates the proper technique to hold a large turtle—with one hand grasping the edge of the shell on the backside and another hand supporting the turtles weight from the underside. You can grasp the plastron above the legs to help with your grip. Remember to never hold or pull a turtle by the tail.

A few warmer winter days this week has seen two of our huge female Sawshells basking on logs. These two give us plenty of babies every year! 🐢🐢

Godzilla the massive water dragon has found a nice big rock to hide under during the winter. On sunny winter days he can be seen soaking up some sun on the entrance to his cave.

Our Blue Tongues have plenty of habitat to hide in over the winter. These 3 like to cuddle up together in a covered spot!

Some of our turtles are still active at the moment. These 2 aren’t piggy backing either. A bit of live action going on here.

One of our Cunningham skinks gave birth recently to a baby. Here is mother & baby together & she is very protective of her offspring.

On a recent trip to the U.S.A, I met a bloke who has these 2 tortoises as his pets. He has had them since they were the size of a 50 cent piece & they are both now 49 years of age. Turtles & tortoises can live in excess of 100 years.
