A routine procedure doesn’t mean a small undertaking. 🐾

A spey—technically called an ovariohysterectomy—is a big moment in your female pet’s life. The small wound you see on the outside is only part of the story: this is major abdominal surgery.

Careful monitoring of her anaesthesia and body temperature matters throughout the procedure. It may be familiar work for our team, but we never take that care for granted.

Then comes your part: keeping her quiet and restricting activity during recovery. A week of taking it easy might be a challenge—but her recovery deserves the same care as her surgery. Follow your veterinary team’s aftercare instructions.

Protecting pets with monitoring that matters
Blood pressure checks are every bit as important for pets as they are for people. Older cats can develop high blood pressure, which—if left untreated—may lead to serious problems such as blindness or stroke. During anaesthesia, low blood pressure can also become life-threatening.

Desexing your pet: the right timing can make a real difference. Desexing helps prevent unwanted litters and may reduce the risk of certain cancers, infections and behavioural issues—but the best age isn’t the same for every animal. As a guide, small dogs may be desexed from around six months, medium breeds around nine months, and large or giant breeds after 12 months, while cats are generally recommended for desexing at around four months.

Important notice for bird owners: Dr Thoraiya will commence six weeks of leave next Monday. Please send any ongoing patient queries to the clinic as soon as possible so she can attend to them tomorrow, her final day before leave.

During her absence, our avian veterinary services will be limited to euthanasia. For all other avian matters, patients will be directed to Dr Craig at Blaxland Veterinary Clinic.

Dr Thoraiya will resume bird appointments on 4 December. We recommend contacting the clinic promptly if you have any questions or require assistance before her leave.

Give your puppy the best start with Puppy Preschool, a practical six-week program for pups aged 8–16 weeks. Led by Delta Institute-qualified trainer Connie, the small Wednesday evening classes use positive, reward-based methods to teach good manners, safe socialisation, preventative care and solutions for common issues such as toilet training, mouthing, jumping and chewing. Classes cost $300, are capped at five dogs and include a complimentary 30-minute virtual follow-up; puppies must have had their first vaccination at least two weeks before starting.
