Dental x-rays matter for pets just as much as they do for people — but the process is a little different. To keep our patients safe and still, pets need to be anaesthetised so they do not bite the x-ray plate, and so we can carefully image every part of the mouth. While we work around each quadrant, our nursing team closely monitors them throughout. It is all part of giving pets the thorough dental care they deserve.

Tick season has started early. Last week, we saw our first tick paralysis case of the season — something we often expect in late winter, especially after a run of warm weather. Even pets in areas that haven’t traditionally had many ticks may now be at risk, as paralysis tick distribution is shifting due to climate, development, bushfire patterns and changing local environments. We are also seeing cases from locations higher up the mountain than in past decades.

Referral to a 24-hour hospital for tick paralysis treatment can quickly reach $10,000, so prevention really is the safest and most cost-effective option. If your pet is not currently protected, now is the time to check their tick prevention is up to date.

Bird flu is now something every Australian bird and poultry owner needs to take seriously. If you keep pet birds or backyard poultry, make sure you know the signs to watch for and have a plan in place. Reliable, up-to-date advice is available through DPI and other official biosecurity sources.

Even if you do not own birds, this still affects the wider community. Wildlife carers, WIRES volunteers and veterinary clinics are likely to carry much of the pressure, often with limited support. The best thing the public can do is stay informed, avoid handling sick or dead birds, report concerns through the right channels and support the people responding on the ground.

Tomorrow at 2pm, a test Critical Alert will be sent to compatible mobile phones across Australia, as well as some smart watches and tablets. Devices may vibrate and play a loud siren-like sound for around 10 seconds.

If loud noises may distress your pet, especially if you will not be home, please switch off your mobile devices and tablets or place them in aeroplane mode before the test time. Leave them off for at least one hour to be safe.
