Winter Is right around the Corner!!!

As it starts to cool down and winter being right around the corner, snake activity starts to decrease.

Snakes may find good warm hiding spots around your house such as rock retaining walls, under concrete slabs and roofs.

Snakes go into a state of brumation which means that their activity slows right down. During the warmer days of winter snake will come out to soak up the warmth of the sun and if there is an opportunity to eat they will take it but then will return to their hiding spot.

We recieved a phone call this afternoon for a non venomous Coastal Carpet Python (Morelia Spilota Mcdowelli) from a storage facility at Warana.

Upon arriving we located this stunner curled up on the floor on the second story of the facility. We did a quick health check before bagging it and noticed that it recently had an injury to its tail that was almost completely healed with no sign of infection.

A snake can survive in the wild even with a stumpy tail as long as it doesnt go past the butt more commonly known as the cloaca.

We recieved a phone call this morning for a mildly venomous Brown Tree Snake (Boiga irregularis) from school in Kureelpa.

Being that they are a nocturnal species we found this little guy hanging out in the shoe shelf in a bathroom, not the most ideal place to be getting some Z's 😴

The kids were so intrigued in the snake and wanted to have a look, lets just say they were able to get front row seats to us catching from a safe distance outside the bathroom.

Once we had the snake safely bagged, and ready to leave we had a bit of a chat with the kids and teachers. The teacher was able to use this to educate the kids on snake safely and what to do if they come across one.

I recieved a call from our next door neighbour this morning waking up to what they thought may of been a snake in their living room.

They sent me a photo and it turned out to be this little fella.

At first glance you might think its a snake.

In fact this is not a snake but a reduced limb Three-claw worm skink (Anomalopus verreauxii) which are completely harmless.

If you look closely you can see little limbs coming from its body.

I went next door and picked it up and put it back in the garden where it belongs and will live a happy life.
