Highly venomous Yellow Bellied Sea Snake 🐍
I’ve seen a few washed up sea snakes being posted recently and most people are not sure why they’re there or what to do. Sea snakes wash up on the beach because they are unwell or too weak to fight against the tide. On the sand, they are not strong enough to move around.
If you ever come across one, call a local wildlife rescuer or snake catcher and we will collect it and take to a wildlife vet.
Spending their entire lives in the ocean means they have incredibly delicate bodies so never try to pick them up and throw them back, it can cause irreversible damage to them.
They are also highly venomous and can still bite, so picking them up can be a risk to your own life.
If treated by a wildlife vet, many recover and can be put back into the ocean later. They rarely interact with people in the water so there’s nothing to worry about!
Never move or relocate wild snakes or wildlife without a permit.
