Ready to strike!

The S-shaped posture displayed by this carpet python allows to the snake to propel itself toward rapidly when it is ready to strike. This along with focus, stillness and quick tongue flicking can serve as a clear warning to back off when a snake feels threatened. If you retreat, the snake will slowly relax. However if continue to approach, then it will likely try to strike.

This posture is also used in ambush of prey. The snake will coil into the S position, remain very still until its prey comes close enough, and then strike with force.

Snakes are never aggressive to humans, they don’t see us as prey. Understanding their body language is a great way to reduce fear.

Wow! Check out this absolutely stunning juvenile EASTERN BROWN SNAKE (pseudonaja textilis) which was sent to me to ID by a mate working in Beerwah today. This is a great example as to why colour isn’t the best way to identify a snake, and why you should never try to relocate or pick up a snake yourself even if it looks harmless or cute. Always ask a professional. Juvenile Eastern Brown venom is just as potent as an adult, and they come in a range of colours and patterns. Being the second most venomous snake on the planet, and responsible for the most deaths in Australia even the babies shouldn’t be underestimated!

This cheeky non-venomous Common Tree Snake was relocated from a garage in Buderim. It took a bit of searching but eventually it made its way out under a side door and hid under a bin. This one was fairly brown in colour until it began showing the beautiful blue colour between it’s scales, to warn me off 🥰

(The only reason I am free handling this snake, is because it is non venomous and non dangerous. If you find a snake, it’s not worth the risk - leave it to the professionals)

Highly venomous Yellow Bellied Sea Snake Rescue 💛Sea Snakes only generally only wash ashore when they are sick, injured or pregnant. If you see a sea snake washed ashore, don’t touch or move it, as they are extremely venomous, and movement could also damage their delicate bodies. Call your local wildlife rescue or snake catcher and we will come out and take it to a wildlife vet for assessment. Thank you to the caring individual for calling me out to help this beautiful creature 💚

Little stumpy coastal carpet python from Alex Headland 🐍💚 The last couple of snakes I’ve relocated have been hanging around just before home opens! Now to me, that’s a strong selling point! 😅 To others, maybe not so much 🤔🤷‍♀️
