🐱🐾 Meet Jin 🐾🐱

Jin came in recently after his family noticed he had been losing weight, drinking lots of water and urinating more frequently. We ran a full blood profile to help determine what might be causing these changes, and unfortunately, Jin was diagnosed with diabetes.

Since his diagnosis, Jin has been coming in for regular check-ups to help manage his diabetes, and he has been doing really well. He has been putting weight back on, drinking less and eating more regularly, which are all great signs that his diabetes is being well controlled.

Jin is a very sweet boy and absolutely loves a Churu (or two) when he comes in for his check-ups.

H5N1 avian influenza strain (H5 bird flu) has been detected in Victoria

Signs of bird flu usually appear in several or all birds in a flock, including:
• Sudden death
• Lethargy or reluctance to walk, eat or drink
• Droopy appearance or ruffled feathers
• Head or limb swelling
• Bruising of the wattle, comb, feet or skin
• Respiratory signs such as panting, nasal discharge or sneezing
• Diarrhoea
• Unusual head or neck posture, incoordination, inability to walk or stand
• Unusual reduction in egg production

Avian influenza can only be confirmed through laboratory testing.

Protecting Your Pet Birds
To help reduce the risk of avian influenza:
• Keep enclosures, feeders, water containers and equipment clean
• Prevent contact between pet birds and wild birds
• Store feed and water where wild birds cannot access or contaminate them
• Practise good hand hygiene
• Quarantine any new birds before introducing them to your flock
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling sick birds or cleaning contaminated enclosures

Keep your pets safe
H5 bird flu mainly affects birds. In rare cases, cats and dogs can get sick if they eat or interact with infected animals.
To help protect your pets from bird flu:
• Keep wild birds away from your pet’s food and water
• Don’t let pets eat or touch sick or dead animals
• Keep dogs on a leash, especially near wild birds
• Keep cats indoors
• If you’ve had direct contact with sick or dead birds, shower and change clothes before touching your pets
• If your pet gets sick after interacting with wild birds, keep them away from children and other animals and contact us as soon as possible.

If you find a sick, injured or deceased bird please follow these steps:
Avoid - Do not touch or move the bird to prevent disease spread
Record - Note time, date, location, and clinical signs. Take photos/videos if safe, without handling
Report - Immediately contact the Emergency
Animal Disease (EAD) Hotline (1800 675 888) (24/7 availability) as required under federal and state/territory legislation.”

Caring for Your Pet with Arthritis
Winter can be tough on our senior pets, especially those living with arthritis. Cold weather often makes stiff joints feel even more uncomfortable, and you may notice your dog or cat moving more slowly or showing signs of soreness.

What is Arthritis?
Arthritis occurs when the cartilage inside joints breaks down, causing pain, inflammation, stiffness, and reduced mobility. While it’s common in older pets, younger pets can also be affected due to injuries or breed predispositions.

Early recognition and treatment can make a big difference to your pet’s comfort and quality of life.

Signs of Arthritis
Dogs:
• Limping or stiffness
• Difficulty getting up or lying down
• Reluctance to climb stairs or jump
• Reduced activity or playfulness
• Licking joints
• Sensitivity when touched

Cats:
• Hesitation to jump or climb
• Stiffness after resting
• Reduced grooming or an unkempt coat
• Hiding or changes in behaviour
• Difficulty using the litter tray
• Reduced activity

Maintain a Healthy Weight: Keeping your pet at a healthy weight reduces stress on painful joints.

Encourage Gentle Movement: Low-impact exercise, such as short walks, swimming, or gentle play, helps maintain mobility and muscle strength. Some pets may also benefit from veterinary rehabilitation and physiotherapy.

Create a Comfortable Home: Provide warm, supportive bedding and consider ramps, steps, or easy access to favourite resting areas.

Support Daily Care: For dogs, raised food and water bowls, supportive bedding, and ramps can help reduce strain. For cats, lower-sided litter trays, raised bowls, and regular brushing can make daily life easier.

Four weeks, endless treats, and one seriously talented group of pups, our latest puppy class has officially graduated.

Over the course of the program, these smart little students mastered the basics, grew more confident by the week, and made new furry friends along the way. Thanks to the dedication of their amazing pawrents and expert guidance from Nikki at Underdog Training they’ve come such a long way. So proud of this crew 🐾

🐶🐾 Meet Charlie 🐾🐶

This sweet Tenterfield Terrier came in recently feeling a bit too itchy for comfort. Dr. Thulz gave her a Cytopoint injection, which works great to settle itchy skin down quickly.

Charlie is already feeling more comfortable.

Fun fact: Tenterfield Terriers are one of Australia’s own breeds, developed from Fox Terriers and prized for their intelligence and energetic personalities.
