🐾 𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐎 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐎🐾

When 11-year-old German Shepherd Nero came to see Dr Tiff for his very first visit, his family knew something wasn't right. He had become lethargic, innapetent and was showing signs of abdominal pain. Blood tests revealed anaemia and significant inflammatory changes, raising immediate concerns.

An abdominal ultrasound uncovered a large amount of fluid within Nero's abdomen, along with a suspicious mass on his spleen. With evidence of internal bleeding, Nero was rushed straight into surgery. 😷

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙙𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙. Not only did Nero have a bleeding mass on his spleen, but tucked within a bundle of adhesions was another large tumour. During surgery, this second mass was identified as an enormous retained testicular tumour.

When discussing the findings with Nero's family, they shared an important piece of history – Nero's testicles had never descended into his sc***um. This condition, known as 𝐜𝐫𝐲𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐦, significantly increases the risk of testicular tumours developing later in life.

Testicular tumours are common in older entire male dogs, and the 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 when one or both testicles remain inside the abdomen. These retained testicles are more prone to tumour development and can grow very large before causing obvious signs, meaning they are often only discovered once a dog becomes seriously unwell.

This is one of the reasons veterinarians recommend 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, particularly in dogs with retained testicles. Surgical removal of undescended testicles eliminates the risk of testicular tumours and other potentially life-threatening complications, such as neoplasia and testicular torsion.

Despite everything stacked against him, Nero sailed through surgery like an absolute champion, and to make his story even better, Nero received the all-clear on his histopathology results. The splenic mass was diagnosed as benign, and the testicular masses showed no evidence of malignancy.

So, we thought it was very fitting to rename him "Nero the Hero!" ❤️

Harvey's hotspot! 💛🐾

Harvey is a sweet Groodle puppy who recently found himself visiting our clinic with a sore under his neck.

Hot spots (acute moist dermatitis) can appear and escalate quite quickly.

These red, irritated patches are often caused by:
🐾 Licking or scratching
🌿 Allergies
☀️ Humidity
🦟 Insect bites
Meaning they are quite prevalent this time of the year.

Signs to watch for:
• Red, moist, inflamed skin
• Hair loss in patches
• Excessive licking or chewing

If you notice a hot spot, it’s best to have it checked promptly like Harvey's mum did. Early treatment keeps your pet comfortable and prevents the area from spreading.

Thankfully, Harvey just needed a haircut ✂️, some cream and other medications (and plenty of treats) to help him feel much better. Since his treatment he is enjoying chin scratches again!.

𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐁𝐎𝐀𝐒 💙🐾

BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) is a condition that affects many flat-faced breeds, making breathing much harder than it should be. 😢 Snoring, noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, poor sleep, overheating and even struggling to recover after activity can all be signs that a pet is working overtime just to breathe.

Recently, gorgeous Valentino underwent BOAS surgery to help open his airways and improve his breathing - and the difference has been life changing for both Valentino and his family 🫶

Before surgery, Valentino’s breathing and snoring were loud enough to affect the whole household. 🫨 Now? He is SUPER silent, sleeping peacefully, and far more rested and comfortable in himself. His family says he’s happier, calmer, and finally getting the quality sleep he deserves.

The biggest win? Valentino can now sleep back in their young son’s bed ❤️ And family camping trips no longer require ear plugs! 🥰

One thing we feel is really important to educate owners about is that BOAS surgery is much more than simply widening the nostrils (external nares). While this is one important component, many dogs have multiple areas of airway obstruction that need to be addressed for the best outcome.

A comprehensive BOAS procedure may include:
🐾 Widening narrowed nostrils (stenotic nares)
🐾 Thinning the soft palate muscle
🐾 Shortening an elongated soft palate
🐾 Removing everted laryngeal saccules
🐾 Removing oversized tonsils if contributing to obstruction

By addressing ALL contributors to airway obstruction, we can achieve much better breathing, sleep quality, exercise tolerance and overall long-term quality of life. 🙌🐾🐶

This is Sammy, she is a bit 𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐬 about coming to the Vet.

Luckily, we have a consult room that has its own 𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙮 away from our reception area. Sammy's mum just gives us a call when she arrives, and we meet her with open arms, no fuss! 😁💓

Like all of our rooms, its kitted out with everything we need and still retains access to the main part of the clinic 🏥🩺🩻
