Please do not leave wildlife unattended while the clinic is closed ⬇️

We had a wild bird placed over our locked gate in an unsecured upside down basket at 2am on the weekend, and was not retrieved (unharmed) until 10am when our nurses arrived. As much as we appreciate your help saving wildlife, this is dangerous, especially given we do have roaming cats, are on a main road and coming into winter.

If you find injured wildlife while we are closed, please take them to a 24 hour vet such as Animal Emergency Centre (AEC).

Knemidokoptes (more commonly known as scaly face or scaly leg mites) usually affect birds with compromised immune systems, as well as young birds. In some cases, the mites can remain dormant within a flock, with symptoms only appearing when a bird’s immune system becomes weakened.

The most common symptom are honeycomb patterned lesions that generally begins on the face and legs but can spread across the entire body. In severe cases, the mites can permanently damage the skin, feather follicles, and even alter the shape of the beak.

Birds showing lesions should be treated individually until symptoms resolve, while the rest of the flock should receive preventative treatment at least once.....

Reg the budgie came to us in July 2025 for a malignant tumour removal on the back of his neck, and he has recently come back when another tumour formed on his face.

He did very well during both surgeries, and was a very good boy while in hospital 😊

Budgerigars are prone to tumours, so annual health checks are ideal to catch these things early!

Student pathologist Tiny is learning how to complete a 'Faecal Wet Prep' from Dr Kathleen.

From a fresh dropping sample, we hunt for parasites (worms, coccidia etc), abnormal bacteria, and abnormal fungus (including macrorahbus & yeast) as well as 'dancing organisms' like flagelletes.

Dr Pat here, just back from the iCare conference in Lisbon and walking 155 km completing the Portuguese Camino to reach Santiago de Cospostelo with long time German avian vet friend Nina Ungerechts. Dr Nina spent a year in Australia in 1989 and we’ve been friend ever since. At iCare I was presenting on and promoting the ultrasonic equivalent to mortar and pestle that Dr Matt and I have been involved in developing with our Vetasyst/Medasyst friends. It was developed in Melbourne and there is nothing like it being sold elsewhere in the world. There was a lot of interest in the unit which replaces pill crushing and enables vets to easily prepare, in their own clinic, a range of tailor-made, precisely dosed, liquid medications.
