🐱 Why Do Cats Sleep So Much? Let’s Talk Cat Sleep Cycles! 💤
Ever wondered why your cat can snooze most of the day and still be ready for zoomies at 3am? That’s because cats have a very different sleep cycle compared to humans.
Cats typically sleep 12–16 hours a day. But they aren’t in deep sleep the whole time. Most of their sleep is actually light sleep or “dozing.” During this stage, they’re still alert enough to wake quickly if they hear a noise or sense movement. This instinct comes from their wild ancestors who needed to stay ready to hunt or avoid predators.
Cats also experience short bursts of deep sleep, which is when their bodies truly rest and recharge. You might notice twitching whiskers, paws moving, or their tail flicking—this usually means they’re dreaming!
Another reason cats seem to sleep all day is because they are crepuscular, meaning they are naturally most active at dawn and dusk. That’s why many cats become playful early in the morning or late at night.
What’s normal?
✅Lots of daytime naps
✅Short bursts of play and energy
✅Sleeping in warm, cosy spots
⚠️ When to check with your vet:
If your cat suddenly sleeps much more than usual, seems difficult to wake, or shows changes in appetite or behaviour, it’s always worth having them checked.
