π¨ Important Alert for Rabbit Owners π°π¨
The NSW Government has announced the release of a new strain of calicivirus to help control wild rabbit populations. This is occurring throughout Greater Sydney, including the Central Coast. The release of this strain is scheduled for the first week of March 2026.
Ensuring your rabbit is up to date with their calicivirus vaccination by the 1st of March 2026 is critical in keeping them safe. Calicivirus can spread through biting insects but also contaminated clothing, food, or surfaces, meaning even indoor rabbits are at risk.
β οΈ Why this matters for pet rabbits β οΈ
Calicivirus is highly contagious and can be fatal. Infected rabbits may show:
β’ Sudden collapse or death
β’ Fever and severe lethargy
β’ Loss of appetite
β’ Breathing difficulty
β’ Bleeding from the nose or mouth
β’ Acute liver failure
Therefore, if your rabbit is not up to date with their calicivirus vaccination, we strongly recommend keeping them safe by booking them in for their vaccination as soon as possible.
π If youβre unsure about your rabbitβs vaccination status or would like to book an appointment, please contact our clinic at 02 9133 1303. Protecting your bunny now, could save their life! β€οΈπ
