The Horses of ANZAC.

It’s ANZAC Day when we who live, with bared but unbowed head,
remember those who died for us, the great and glorious dead.
The men who, in their thousands, made the final sacrifice
in World War One and other wars in which they paid the price.

But what of all the horses who accompanied to war
the NZ Mounted Rifles whose battalions are no more?
Or the brave Australian Lighthorsemen and Mounted Cavalry
whose horses, from their pastures torn, were shipped across the sea?

Ten thousand from New Zealand, and at least sixteen times more
Australia sent. Those steeds bore men to fight the First World War.
Many thousand died when struck by shells or rapid small arms fire,
while hostile desert toil caused many others to expire.

When the war was over and our allied side had won the day,
what happened to those gallant steeds who had survived the fray?
The problems of logistics due to quarantine and cost
prevented shipment home, so the majority were lost.

While some were sold to butchers or the Indian cavalry,
the majority were left in Egypt, sold to slavery
where, under harsh conditions, they would die in some stone quarry.
Men shot their horses first to spare them from a fate so sorry.

Of two hundred thousand horses who were part of the ANZAC,
only one man from each country saved his horse to bring him back!
And so this tale of man and beast in tragedy was ended,
which says little for man’s gratitude to those he had befriended.
