Looks like the sun (and wind 🌬️) is finally playing ball for this weekend’s NCEC Charity Dressage & Showjumping Day!

I’m the on-call duty vet for the weekend, so I’ll be around… but hopefully you all won’t need to call me 🤞😂

However! Just because your horse is too old and broken (I’m looking at you Bill 👀) or perhaps hasn’t been ridden in two weeks thanks to the rain, doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the fun.

You all did great having a crack at aging this horse! And honestly… there’s no “bad” answer when you have a go. Aging horses is tricky because they have a habit of not reading the textbooks 😅

This video is a little walk-through of what I was looking at and hopefully answers some of your questions about how we estimate age from their teeth.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the horse mums 💛

Early mornings, long days at the show, standing by the ring, strapping, cheering…
And being there to patch us up when things don’t quite go to plan (as they sometimes don’t!).

It’s a big job—and one that never really gets the credit it deserves.

We couldn’t do it without you.

Happy World Donkey Day! 🫏

They might be smaller than their horsey cousins, but donkeys pack a whole lot of personality into a very fluffy package. Clever, opinionated, loyal… and sometimes just a little too smart for our plans.

Like all equids, they still need the regular TLC — teeth, feet, worming plans and vaccinations — but honestly they do seem to have been built a bit tougher than the average horse!

Stoic by nature, donkeys are also masters at hiding pain and illness, so those routine health checks are just as important for the little long-ears.

Give your donkey an extra scratch from us today! 🫏💚

Remember these guys?? Same foals, 6 months later—less baby, same attitude… and some very enthusiastic wolf teeth 😄

Wolf teeth are small, redundant teeth that really just get in the way—especially once a bit is involved. The earlier we take them out, the less everyone sweats (horse and vet included!).

Safe to say these would’ve been absolute monsters by 2 years of age 😅

Yesterday was World Veterinary Day — which in Australia also happens to be ANZAC Day. And there’s no way I’m blurring the line between vets (the ones with stethoscopes) and vets (the ones who served).

So we’re taking a leaf out of our American colleagues’ book and celebrating today instead 🇺🇸🐎

How did I celebrate?
Taking a moment out of an on-call weekend to actually sit and enjoy my coffee ☕

To all the vets out there — the jugglers, problem-solvers, coffee enthusiasts and animal advocates — cheers to you.

To remember those who have served, and those who continue to serve.
To acknowledge the sacrifice, the courage, and the mateship that shaped our country.

On ANZAC Day, we reflect, we honour, and we say thank you.
