🐎 Oaky — 3 Weeks Into Training at JR Cutting & Performance Horses 🐎

Today was Sienna’s first ride back on Oaky since he came into training with us — and she did a fantastic job 👏💛

Her first comment afterwards was:
👉 “He is so responsive to my seat and leg aids.”

And honestly… that’s exactly what we’re aiming for.

Because it’s one thing for a horse to go well for the trainer…
👉 But what really matters to us is that the horse goes well for the owner and rider.

Over the past 3 weeks we’ve been focusing on building the foundations needed to help set Oaky up for campdrafting and challenges moving forward.

✔️ Softness & responsiveness
✔️ Body control
✔️ Confidence around cattle
✔️ Positioning & understanding his job
✔️ Creating a horse that stays soft, confident and trainable

It’s been great to watch both horse and rider continue to grow together.

Oaky will continue to stay in training for another 4 weeks, with regular visits from Sienna to help continue building their partnership and to ensure she knows all of his buttons before he heads home.

This is exactly why we put so much focus into foundation work first — because when the basics are solid, everything else starts to come together.

We’re excited to see where the future takes this team 🐎🔥

🐎 HORSES IN TRAINING — WHAT WE ACTUALLY WORK ON 🐎

A lot of people ask…
👉 “What do you actually do with horses in training?”

---

It’s not just about getting them going…

👉 It’s about building a horse that understands their job
👉 A horse that can stay soft, confident and in control

---

When horses come into training, we focus on:

✔️ Foundations first
Stop, draw (back up), body control and responsiveness

✔️ Softness & suppleness
So your horse isn’t just doing it… they’re understanding it

✔️ Confidence around cattle
Introducing pressure the right way — not overwhelming them

✔️ Mechanical cow work
Building understanding before adding real cattle

✔️ Real cattle application
Teaching the horse to read, respond and stay in position

---

🐄 Because when things get tough…
👉 you need something to go back to

---

This is how we create horses that:
✔️ Stay trainable
✔️ Stay confident
✔️ And keep improving

---

We currently have **2 training positions available**

---

👉 If you’ve got a horse that needs a start on cattle
👉 Or one that needs more foundation and confidence

This is exactly where we can help

🐄 HOW TO STOP CROWDING YOUR COW 🐄

One of the biggest mistakes we see…
👉 Riders getting too close

And it causes more problems than you think

When you crowd your cow:
❌ You add pressure
❌ The cow speeds up
❌ Your horse gets reactive

👉 The goal isn’t to get closer…
it’s to be in the right position

🔧 HOW TO FIX IT

✔️ Create space
Use your cow-side leg to keep your horse off the cow
Give the cow room to move

✔️ Match the cow’s speed
You should only be travelling at the same pace as the cow
Not faster

✔️ Stay on your line
Don’t cut in too tight trying to stop it
Let your position do the work

🐎 When you get this right:
✔️ Everything slows down
✔️ Your horse relaxes
✔️ The cow becomes easier to control

👉 Good cattle work isn’t about pressure…
it’s about control

💬 Do you find yourself getting too close?

🐄 HOW TO FIX BEING “TOO SHORT” ON A COW 🐄

If you feel like you’re always chasing your cow…
you’re probably too short

👉 Being “too short” means you’re behind the correct position to control the cow
and constantly trying to catch up to the control point on the cow

🔧 HOW TO FIX IT
✔️ 1. Don’t wait for the cow to start moving across the pen after it turns

If you wait, you’ll always be behind and chasing

👉 Fix:
Let your horse turn with the cow,
then ride forward to the correct position to control the cow

✔️ 2. Match the cow’s line

Once you turn with the cow:
👉 Get moving parallel straight away

👉 Your job is to get there just before the cow,
at the same time as the cow,
or even better — stop the cow before it gets there

✔️ 3. Get your horse’s nose past the cow

👉 Your horse’s head should be just past the cow’s nose

This puts you in a controlling position
instead of always being behind the cow

✔️ 4. Stay up on your line

👉 Every time you slip back, you lose control of the cow

👉 Fix:
Hold your position once you’re there
Don’t drop back — stay up on your line and let your horse do the job

🐎 When you get this right:
✔️ Everything slows down
✔️ Your horse relaxes
✔️ The cow becomes easier to control

👉 Good cattle work isn’t about chasing a cow…
it’s about being in control of the cow — quietly and quickly

💬 Do you find yourself getting “too short”?
👇 Comment SHORT and I’ll help you work through it
