You’re allowed to prioritise the bond with your dog — even when the world expects performance.
Relationship-first training isn’t about lowering standards.
It’s about choosing something that holds up under pressure, stress, and real life.
If you’ve been looking for support that values relationship as much as skill, you’re welcome to reach out when you’re ready.

One of the ways I know our relationship is doing its job is how Rory stays close when things are busy or stressful.
When it’s noisy.
When there are lots of people around.
When the environment could easily pull his attention elsewhere.
There’s no cue.
No reward.
No correction.
And most of the time, no one even notices.
He could be focused on food or the environment — but instead, he checks in with me and stays connected. And in those moments, I feel safe.
This is what “working well” often looks like in real life.
Not flashy skills. Not perfect behaviour. Just quiet awareness and choice that comes from relationship.
If you’re training an assistance dog and worrying that things don’t look impressive enough, this is your reminder: these subtle moments matter deeply.
And if you’re wanting support that values this kind of work — the kind that protects both ends of the lead — that support is available.

Today, February 24th is National Service Animals Day, a day to honor the service and sacrifice of all service animals and their handlers! The Purple Poppy is the international symbol for service animals and their handlers that provide for our safety, security and independence and celebrates the human/animal bond.

Relationship-first training doesn’t just support dogs — it supports handlers too.
When the relationship is strong:
– mistakes don’t feel catastrophic
– dogs recover faster
– handlers trust themselves more
– outside pressure has less impact
Relationship isn’t an extra.
It’s what holds the whole team together.

When behaviour feels messy or unpredictable, it’s often the relationship that keeps teams steady.
A dog who trusts you can recover from mistakes.
A handler who feels connected can breathe through hard moments.
If things don’t look perfect right now, it doesn’t mean your foundation is weak.
It may mean it’s quietly doing its job.
Support doesn’t have to wait until things feel “good enough.”

There was a period recently where training took a back seat for us.
Disability-related fatigue, mental load, and family demands all landed at once, and for a few weeks my capacity was just… lower. Less energy. Less confidence. Less sense of momentum.
What surprised me most wasn’t what we lost — it was what we didn’t.
Rory’s trust didn’t disappear.
His ability to settle stayed intact.
Our bond didn’t weaken.
And even when I felt less confident heading out and about, Rory wasn’t.
That steadiness didn’t come from pushing through or drilling skills.
It came from the relationship we’ve built over time.
I’m sharing this because I know how quickly disabled handlers can assume they’re doing something wrong when capacity dips. A quieter season doesn’t mean your foundation is fragile. Often, it means it’s doing exactly what it’s meant to do.
Relationship is resilient.
If this sounds familiar and you need support that values sustainability over speed, that support is available — and you don’t have to wait until you feel “back on track” to reach out.

Putting relationship first doesn’t mean letting everything slide.
It means:
– teaching skills in ways your dog can understand
– prioritising trust over control
– building confidence instead of compliance
Clear boundaries and strong relationships can exist together — and they work best when they do.

Some days, connection is the only thing you have capacity for — and that’s okay.
Sitting together.
Checking in.
Choosing calm over correction.
Those moments still build your dog’s confidence and your trust in each other.
You don’t have to be doing formal training every day for your relationship to grow.
If you need guidance that honours low-capacity days, you’re not alone.
