Ouch! Unfortunately for this 8-year-old Kelpie, this is what severe arthritis looks like.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative joint disease characterised by the breakdown of cartilage, which cushions the bones in the joint. This toe (along with a few others if you can spot them!) is showing some very painful arthritic changes - narrowing of the joint spaces, new bone formation, and joint swelling.

While there is no magic pill to fix arthritis, an individualised, multimodal approach is taken to manage the condition. To support her joints and slow disease progression, this patient has begun two treatments that reduce inflammation and promote a healthy joint environment. After two months, her condition has improved and she is enjoying walks again 🐾

Because we could never say this enough when it comes to keeping our pets safe at Easter 🐾

Our tips?

🐰 Choose currant-free Hot Cross Buns to err on the side of caution (….and apple and cinnamon is worth a try!)

🐰 If organising an Easter Egg Hunt - count the number of chocolate treats that are hidden, so you can make sure all treats are accounted for afterwards and not found by your peckish pooch later on.

Also, while cats are far less likely to help themselves to the above, stranger things have happened! The same advice applies for our feline friends 🐱
