As a profession, we are lucky to have some very good post graduate education available to us through various sources such as the AVA. Last night I watched a webinar presented by Dr Derek Knottenbelt about equine melanomas. Most horse owners are familiar with them and aware that they are common in grey horses. It was very interesting to learn more about the disease and as Dr Knottenbelt pointed out, we can do a lot more for our grey horses and be proactive about early diagnosis and treatment.
I would like to encourage my grey horse owners (and other colours!) to be vigilant and ask your veterinarian about the significance of any changes in your horse’s skin. Early intervention is key for long term welfare.

We all know how hard it's been this year to get our hands on some good quality hay.
It's important to check your hay for grass seeds before you feed it out.
Lucky for this horse, his owner was on to it straight away and brought him in when she noticed things were not quite right.
The signs that this horse was showing were salivating excessively and a bad smell from his mouth.
A thorough sedated exam of his mouth revealed severe ulceration of the tongue due to grass seeds.
We are confident he will be 100% in no time!
