Governments around the world are telling citizens to prepare. The UK, Sweden, Norway, Germany and Japan have all issued “be ready” advice, and now Australians are being urged to stockpile tinned food, bottled water and medication as threats grow.

Being prepared is smart. But a month of food in the cupboard assumes you have the money to buy it.

For families living week to week, stockpiling isn’t an option. It’s hard enough to fill the fridge for the next seven days. And when panic buying empties the shelves and pushes prices up, those families are hit first and hardest.
Preparedness advice that only works for people with spare cash leaves a gap, and that gap is food insecurity.
