🔍 Masters Exteriors Debrief 🔍

First up — a quick note from me!
You may have noticed I was judging from a seated position all day 😅 I’ve just been released from hospital and am supposed to be taking it easy… but I was far too excited to be there judging for you all to stay home!

Now, onto the search

This was a mid-sized Masters Exterior with:
✨ Unknown hides (1–3) — we had 2 hides today
✨ 3 distractors

The main complexity in this search:
I had 2 threshold DISTRACTORS this time instead of hides!

Layout-wise:
➡️ Both hides were on the LEFT side of the search are and blowing OUT of the area. Meaning dogs had to be allowed to work outside the space to source odour

➡️ The RIGHT side was completely blank… but had most of the objects

So naturally, lots of teams got pulled into that side and did a few laps before committing elsewhere

Also, majority grass, which added that extra layer of distraction

Hide locations:
🧱 Hide 1: In the brickwork
🪑 Hide 2: Corner of the table (most missed hide today)

📊 Stats from today:
✔️ 60% pass rate
❌ 11 teams missed the table hide
❌ 2 teams missed the brick hide
❌ 2 teams didn’t call finish after finding both hides (looking for a third)
🐶 5 dogs alerted on food
🐶 1 dog alerted on pooling odour
🐶 3 teams found both hides, then added a false alert at the end

⏱️ Time was intentionally on the shorter side — so a lot of you heard that 30-second call and chose to finish without feeling 100% sure!

I hope this one made you think a bit, trust your dogs a bit more and maybe even see what your dog looks like when the say they are done searching…

I know we had 1 dog lay down in protest!

Really nice work out there — some lovely handling and great dog commitment to odour!

The ultimate mind game… a BLANK room 😮‍💨
With a cheeky food distractor and a 1:30 time limit ⏱️
Proof that sometimes the hardest thing to find… is nothing at all - so many handlers called finish only because they thought they were out of time!

Room 2 🧩
3 hides, busy space, and that CONVERGING ODOUR puzzle
3 minutes to work it out… and wow did it test teams!
So many beautiful searches finding 2/3 hides — but that last one had everyone calling finish after just finding 2!

Whiteboard or box… box or whiteboard… you could have one, but not both apparently!!!

Room 3 🎯
2 hides, smaller space, but not as simple as it sounds…
Featuring one parameter hide and a piano hide
2:30 on the clock ⏱️
If something got missed — it was that sneaky wall hide

Huge congrats to everyone who stepped up to the challenge

Masters level is no joke ajd you should all be proud for giving it a go

✨ NOT 1, NOT 2… BUT 4NOVICE TITLES THIS WEEKEND!!! ✨

We are SO incredibly proud of our teams who got out there and spent their weekend doing the things their dogs love!

Whether you walked away with ribbons or not, what matters most is that you showed up, supported your dog, and had a great time together. That’s what this sport is all about

But a special shoutout to our new teams on the block… because starting something new can be scary and hard. Walking into your first trials, trusting your training, and stepping up to the line takes courage and you did it!!

And to those who are SO close… I see you
A pass or two away from your titles and we’ll be celebrating you next

SWWP EXCELLENT EXTERIORS 🐾🌧️💨

We got absolutely everything weather-wise for this one… cold, wet, windy and sometimes all at once, sometimes just insane wind which of course made for a very “fun” exterior search.

✨ 12 / 26 passes
• 3 hides
• 4 minutes

This one asked a lot of teams:
Converging odour
50% of the search blank (all 3 hides sitting on the left side )
Lollies as a food distractor 🍬
A unique search area that really made handlers think about coverage

Breakdown:
13 dogs missed the high hide
4 missed the chair hide
3 missed the show podium hide
5 false alerts on food
5 false alerts on… absolutely nothing 😅
2 time outs

Honestly, this was a tough one. The kind of search where the conditions alone can change everything.

Huge well done to everyone who stepped up and gave it a go — just showing up and running in that weather was a win

It’s Breed Shout Out time!!!

Over the course of last year, we’ve had the absolute honour and privilege of working with not 1, not 2, but SIX Xolos in our Sydney classes!

The Xoloitzcuintli (Xolo) is a rare, primitive breed originating from Mexico 🇲🇽 known for their unique look, ancient history, and incredibly thoughtful nature.

Xolos are highly intelligent and very trainable, but they tend to have lower levels of biddability. That means they’re not always about “just doing the thing” and finding a training style that truly works for them can take creativity, patience, and a bit of experimentation. And when you get it right… they are AMAZING 🔥

Over the past year, we’ve had 4 of these incredible dogs step into the trial ring — collecting titles, multiple placings, and so many quallies along the way! #

But what I love most isn’t the ribbons — it’s seeing just how much they LOVE this sport. Watching their confidence grow, seeing them problem-solve, and finding ways to keep them motivated when things get tough has been such a rewarding journey.

Every single Xolo we’ve worked with has been completely unique, and I’ve loved learning from each one

A huge thank you to their amazing owners for trusting me with their scent work journey it’s been such a privilege to be part of your team

And a very happy Graduation from another trial prep term to Nora, Belmont, Dos and while he might not be a naked he is part of the incredible pack mr Little graduated too!
