Hi.
We have had lots of messages in the last week asking about our "warehouse" and nursery. So I will put up a little information / background so you are better able to understand what we do here.
"Russell's Orchids" is a hobby of Russell Lynch that got a "little out of control". It started out about 50 years ago, when Russell became curious in how orchids grew and developed and what makes each one a little different to the next. So he started collecting them from private property all across Australia, and studying their growing patterns, flowers and colours.
Over the last 40 years, his curiosity turned into breeding them - to see if you cross an Australian native Cymbidium orchid that has a large flower stem with multiple flowers with another Australian Native Cymbidium what will this orchid look like. (But It takes 5 - 7 years to get a result)
But with this curiosity comes lots of little orchids that need to grow up and become mature enough to flower. Because "you cant just have 10 or 20 new orchids, in case some wont grow", so lets grow 200 or 300 of each of them!!
As you can now imagine, there was quite a few orchids taking up a lot of space. His breeding became well known, and people were requesting to buy these new variations he was creating and the ones that he had discovered. THIS was the start of Russell's Orchids.
But now Russell is in his mid 80's - his daughter (VJ) and her children (Jessica and JD) have had to help him with maintaining all these orchids.
So because of his age this means that Russell is no longer breeding new crosses, because 7 years is a long time to wait to see what a new cross will look like.
He still loves his orchids, but has to become more realistic with the amount that he is able to look after. So he is selling off some of his prized collection. Once these are sold, they will not be replaced, so our stock is now limited.
ALL HIS ORCHIDS varieties are named after family members. So they are special to him and his extended family.
Ones such as VJ Laura and Tara's Gate are original variations collected from private property. They have not been crossbred. Therefore they are limited. We no longer have any available stock to sell, but we do have a large waitlist for these for when we are able to divide them.
Hoping that this makes it a little easier to understand what Russell does and how these orchids come about.
Regards Russell, his daughter (VJ) and grandchildren (Jessica and JD)
