Are you ready to add a little chaotic cuteness to your life? Say hello to Eggatha – a pint-sized calico diva with a voice as big as her personality! At just a few months old, Eggatha is already making herself known as the reigning queen of meow-nologues and dramatic entrances.
🎨 About Eggatha:

• Someone who loves a chatty cat with main character energy
• A home that enjoys spontaneous zoomies and enthusiastic storytelling
• Anyone in need of a little more spring in their step and sass in their life
🌷 Extras: She comes fully vetted, and her adoption fee of $250 covers her desexing and first vaccination. She’s ready to rule your home with a velvet (pawed) glove. Eggatha promises to fill your days with laughter, snuggles, and a whole lot of meows.

Is Your Horse or Pony at Risk of Laminitis This Dry Season / Autumn?
Now’s the Time to Test for Cushing’s Disease (PPID) and Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS)

As the days grow shorter and the Dry Season approaches, now is the time to take action when it comes to laminitis prevention. Whether you have a competition horse, a paddock retiree, or a pony that’s “just a bit round,” autumn is the best time to test for the two most common underlying causes of laminitis—PPID and EMS.

Why test in autumn/start of dry?

As daylight hours decrease, horses and ponies naturally produce more ACTH—a hormone we measure to diagnose Cushing’s disease (PPID). This seasonal rise actually helps us detect cases more accurately, especially in horses that aren’t showing dramatic symptoms yet.

Early signs of PPID might include:
• A long or wavy coat that doesn’t shed properly
• Loss of topline or muscle mass
• Increased drinking and urination
• Lethargy or decreased performance
• Recurrent infections or abscesses
• Unexplained or repeated bouts of laminitis

What about EMS?

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is most common in ponies, native breeds, and easy-keepers. These horses and ponies are typically insulin resistant, meaning their body can’t properly regulate sugar from grass or feed—leading to dangerous blood sugar spikes that can trigger laminitis.

EMS may show up as:
• Fat deposits along the neck, rump, or behind the shoulders
• A cresty neck
• Overweight body condition (though some are normal weight!)
• Lameness, stiffness, or mild laminitis episodes that come and go

Even horses and ponies that “look fine” can be silently at risk. Without testing, you might not know there’s a problem until you’re dealing with a full-blown laminitic episode.

All laminitis has a cause—and it must be identified.

Laminitis is not a disease—it’s a symptom of an underlying problem. Whether it’s hormonal (like PPID), metabolic (like EMS), inflammatory, dietary, or even related to pain or illness elsewhere in the body, identifying the root cause is essential to proper treatment and prevention.

Simply treating the pain or trimming the feet won’t prevent it from coming back.

How Northern Territory Veterinary Services can help

Our experienced equine vets can:
• Perform accurate blood testing for PPID and EMS
• Interpret results in the context of NT conditions and your horse or pony’s lifestyle
• Develop a tailored management plan that may include diet changes, medication, exercise adjustments, and farrier support
• Provide ongoing guidance to help reduce the risk of future laminitis

April is the time to act

Don’t wait until your horse or pony is sore or lame. If they’ve had laminitis before—or if you’re unsure of their risk—book a consultation with our team today.

We’re here to help you stay one step ahead with proactive testing and practical, Territory-savvy advice.

🐭🦉 Rodent Baits poison Wildlife!!

Owliver the Barn Owl was brought to us by a member of public suffering from secondary rat bait toxicity. He was unable to stand, unable to eat and couldn’t keep his head up. Luckily for Owliver, he was found early and after more than a week of intensive care at the clinic and then after care with Wildcare he made a full recovery!

Rodent baits are dangerous to dogs, cats and other animals, but wildlife such as owls, eagles and other raptors can also be affected, by either eating the bait directly, but more commonly by eating mice/rats (their natural diet) who themselves have eaten the bait! This is called secondary poisoning

If you must control rodents on your property, consider using a live trap which is a safe and humane way to control rodents. If this isnt feasible, snap traps are considered a wildlife-friendly option of killing rodents. If you must use poisons, consider using first generation poisons as these carry less risk of secondary poisoning to wildlife. Example brands are Racumin and Ratsak Double Strength.

Senior citizen Chuck came in for a dental this week after his owner noticed he had some tartar on his teeth and he had bad breath.

A scale, polish and a few extractions later his mouth was as good as new!
Feeling a bit woozy after his anaesthetic, he was very happy to be cuddled and carried around by Nurse Kendyl whilst he recovered.
His owner is pleased to report that he bounced right back once he got home!

If you are concerned about your pets teeth or bad breath, contact us for a consultation or book in for a dental! 🦷
