Part two.
At 14, a little lost and a little troubled, I got sent to pick up dog š© at the spca in my home town of Hawkes Bay, NZ.
What I saw was a lot of dogs who reflected how I felt myself.
They were extremely misunderstood.
I wasnāt behaving the way I was because I was choosing to be bad, and neither were they.
When most people think of rescues, they think of all the dogs they save.
When I think of rescues, I think of all the dogs that get let down.
The dogs who needed a little more time, a little more patience, a little more understanding.
This girl right here is who I called big mama lol. She was a Great Dane who got surrendered with her litter of puppies.
She was emaciated, scared, confused and understandably defensive of her babies.

I asked if I could go with her to be euthanised so she didnāt feel scared. I was denied.
I saw this time, and time again as the years went on. Certain dogs being given more chances based on someone liking them more.
People being allowed to pick a dog based on aesthetics, not a personality/lifestyle match.
Anyone who works, or has worked in rescue with a heart like mine knows the burn out all too well. You start to despise people and the industry as a whole.
Fast forward to the positive only movement, social media and people running these facilities without a f*cking clue on behaviour and I saw it happening more and more.
Thatās when I decided I couldnāt help dogs from inside the prison walls and I decided to move into dog training and start the next chapter of my journeyā¦
