I am truly humbled to receive the Jakob Malmo Bovine Practitioner of the Year Award. Dr Malmo’s outstanding contributions to bovine medicine and veterinary education have paved the way for us today, so it’s an honour to be recognised in his name.
I’d like thank the higher power, in whatever form that is, for creating a whole series of lucky breaks (that obviously does not include my broken arm, neck and nose or the splattered spleen courtesy of the animals we choose to work on) but the truly lucky ones in my life that have allowed me to live my dream, the pinnacle of which is receiving this award.
To my mentors who I consider some of the greats in the cattle reproduction, Syd Miller, George Seidel and Peter Elsden, I cannot thank them enough for their wisdom and encouragement.
To my cattle vet colleagues. I am genuinely humbled to receive this award and that is absolutely not false modesty. I am constantly amazed at the depth of knowledge held in this group. So, to be acknowledged in this way by the one group of veterinarians I admire the most is beyond belief.
Most importantly, I would like to thank my family for allowing me to have a go. It hasn’t been easy for Rowie, Jessica, Aaron or Adam having a husband and father who is constantly on the road - made worse probably because they were with me for a lot of those miles.
I can only think I have received this honour, not because of my extraordinary skills or great knowledge - I have always strived to be of FAQ ( fair average quality) - but because I have been around longer than most. As the adage goes the longer you live the more people you know who are in high places - this I think is my ace card.
