Beautiful Dutchess recently underwent a routine Des*xing procedure. After her procedure, Dutchess enjoyed some well-deserved rest time in the humidicrib, where her temperature, comfort, and recovery were carefully supported during the early post-operative period. Maintaining warmth and a calm environment is an important part of helping young patients recover smoothly after anaesthesia and surgery.

She was such a sweet girl who did incredibly well post surgery.

Sweet Joey recently visited Animalia Vet Clinic for a routine health check, where a heart murmur was detected during his examination.

To further investigate, Joey was recommended for an echocardiogram, which is a specialised ultrasound of the heart that allows us to assess heart structure and function in detail and obtain an accurate diagnosis. Echocardiography is an important tool in monitoring cardiac health and helps guide the best ongoing care plan for our patients. It is also non-invasive and does not require sedation in most patients, making it a safe and low-stress way to evaluate cardiac health.

Because heart disease can progress over time, Joey will return for a repeat echocardiogram in 12 months to assess for any changes and ensure we continue monitoring his condition closely.

Early detection and routine monitoring play a vital role in managing heart disease and supporting long-term quality of life for our pets.

Buzz the St Bernard recently came in for his castration procedure! He was a calm, gentle boy throughout his visit, and his surgery and recovery went smoothly.

This is also a great opportunity to talk about des*xing recommendations in large breed dogs, especially giant breeds like St Bernards.

For large and giant breed dogs, timing of des*xing is an important consideration. Unlike smaller breeds, these dogs have a much longer growth period, and s*x hormones play a role in the development of bones, joints, and muscle mass.

In many cases, veterinarians may recommend delaying des*xing in large breed males until closer to skeletal maturity (often around 12–18 months, sometimes later depending on the individual dog). This is because early des*xing has been associated in some studies with an increased risk of certain orthopaedic conditions in large breeds, as well as changes in growth patterns.

That said, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The best timing depends on factors such as breed, intended lifestyle, behaviour, and individual health risks. A tailored discussion with your vet helps ensure the decision balances long-term joint health, disease prevention, and behavioural considerations.

Merlin the Border Collie recently visited us for surgical removal of three skin lumps.

Lump removals like Merlin’s are an important reminder of the value of early assessment and treatment. While not every lump is harmful, changes in size, shape, texture, or appearance can sometimes indicate underlying concerns. Early removal allows us to address potential issues sooner, before they have the chance to grow, ulcerate, or become more complex to manage.

Even “small” or seemingly harmless lumps can change over time, which is why we recommend having any new or changing lumps checked promptly by a veterinarian. In many cases, early intervention can ensure that surgery is simpler, smoother post surgery recovery, and better outcomes for your pet.

Alf recently visited us for his vaccinations, looking confident and settled after an interesting start to life. Alf was found as a tiny stray kitten at just 4 weeks old, Alf was lovingly hand-raised by his now mum. With round-the-clock care, he grew into the healthy, thriving cat he is today. The best part of his story… his mum couldn’t imagine life without him and he is now officially part of the family.

Vaccinations are an important step in keeping cats like Alf protected against common infectious diseases and ensuring they stay happy and healthy as they grow. We love watching happy ending's unfold, and can't wait to be apart of Alf's story as he grows.

Nancy Drew has been making herself right at home, enjoying a warm, comfy space while the cooler weather sets in outside.

Snuggled up, relaxed, and well looked after; she’s been taking full advantage of soft bedding, cosy corners, and a calm environment designed to help our feline guests feel safe and settled while away from home. The cooler days are the perfect excuse for extra naps and Nancy Drew certainly agrees.

If you’re planning time away, our cat boarding facilities provide a warm, comfortable, and stress-free stay for your feline family members.

August the beautiful American Bulldog recently visited us for some ongoing skin concerns and she’s definitely not alone. As the weather changes, we often see an increase in itchy, uncomfortable pups dealing with skin issues. For August, this meant working through the cause of her irritation and starting a tailored management plan.

Signs your dog may have a skin issue:
• Itching, scratching or licking
• Red, inflamed, or irritated skin
• Hair loss or a thinning coat
• Odour or discharge
• Recurring ear problems

Managing skin conditions in dogs can include:
- Identifying underlying causes (allergies, parasites, infections)
- Medicated baths and topical treatments
- Dietary support or food trials
- Consistent flea prevention
- Long-term management plans

Skin conditions are often ongoing and require patience; but with the right plan, pets like August can feel much more comfortable.
