🐍 With the warmer weather, we’re seeing more snakes on the move – and unfortunately, snake bites can be fatal to pets if not treated quickly.

Signs of snake bite can include:
⚡ Sudden weakness or collapse
⚡ Trembling, drooling or vomiting
⚡ Dilated pupils
⚡ Difficulty breathing

⏱️ If you suspect your pet has been bitten, treat it as an emergency and seek veterinary help immediately. Every minute counts.

➡️ Prevention tip: Keep grass short, avoid letting pets roam through long grass or bushland, and always supervise them outdoors.

Your quick action could save their life. ❤️🐾

⚠️ We’re seeing an increase in paralysis ticks at the moment. These ticks release a toxin that can quickly cause paralysis and even death if not treated promptly.

✅ Prevention is your pet’s best protection — make sure they’re up to date with their tick preventatives and check them daily, especially after being outdoors.

If you notice signs like weakness, vomiting, or difficulty breathing, call us straight away. Early treatment can make all the difference.

🐾 Brave boy Chico is recovering after his TPLO surgery (a special knee surgery to help with torn cruciate ligaments). This procedure helps stabilise the joint so he can get back to enjoying walks and play without pain. 🐶💛

We’re so proud of him for being such a good patient – now it’s rest, cuddles, and a careful recovery ahead! ✨

🐾 When playtime turns into an emergency 🐾

This cheeky Dogue de Bordeaux, Hank, decided to swallow his entire rope toy instead of just chewing it. 😳 We induced vomiting and — thankfully — he brought it back up before it could cause serious damage.

⚠️ Why swallowing toys is dangerous:
- Blockages in the stomach or intestines
- Choking hazards
- Internal damage from strings or sharp parts
- Risk of emergency surgery if it can’t be vomited or passed

✅ Prevention tips:
Supervise dogs with rope or soft toys
Throw away damaged toys before they unravel
Choose size-appropriate, durable toys for strong chewers
This big guy was lucky — but not all pets are. If you think your dog has swallowed something they shouldn’t, call your vet immediately. 🐶💛

🚫 Why giving bones to dogs can be risky 🚫

This mini dachshund came to us after a chicken bone got stuck in his throat — and he’s not alone. We see this more often than you might think!

⚠️ Risks of giving bones (raw or cooked):
- Blockages in the throat, stomach, or intestines
- Splinters that can pierce the mouth, throat, or gut
- Broken teeth from chewing
- Constipation or painful impaction
- Severe infections if a perforation occurs

If you do give bones to your pets, ensure they are raw bones. We also recommend giving them while you are at home so you can supervise your pet and ensure they are safe.

🚨 Serious Dog Fight Injuries – More Than Meets the Eye

This poor dog came to us after a severe dog fight, with extensive open wounds across his chest. From the outside, the damage was confronting — but what we found beneath the surface was even worse.

One of the wounds tracked over 10cm deep (yes, that’s a pair of haemostats disappearing into muscle tissue). These bites didn’t just break skin — they crushed, tore, and created deep pockets where infection could easily take hold.

He underwent surgery to flush and clean the wounds, place drains, and carefully repair the damaged tissue — but that’s just the first step.

⚠️ Dog fight wounds are high-risk for delayed healing.

Even with early surgery, these injuries can break down days later due to:

- Bacterial contamination
- Tissue death from crushing injuries
- Fluid build-up beneath the skin

That’s why patients like this need close monitoring, repeat wound care, and sometimes even revision surgeries.

👉 If your dog is ever involved in a fight, please don’t wait. Early treatment improves outcomes — but we stay vigilant for days after, because wounds like this don’t always behave.

Meet Daisy, the very good girl who decided three sewing pins looked like a tasty treat 🧷🧷🧷 (10/10 do not recommend).

We acted quickly and took Daisy in for a scope (a camera procedure) to try and retrieve the pins without surgery. Unfortunately, they were just a bit too far down and too risky to leave in — so this brave pup had to go into abdominal surgery to have them removed safely.

We’re happy to report that Daisy is now recovering beautifully, and back to chewing on the right things.

👉 If you ever suspect your pet has eaten something sharp, stringy, or just plain weird – don’t wait. The sooner we can act, the safer the outcome.

🚨**“Why can’t we go straight to surgery/start diagnostics?”**

We know it’s stressful when your pet is unwell — and you want answers or action right now.
But sometimes, the safest thing we can do is press pause and stabilise them first. 🐾

If your pet is dehydrated, in shock, or has low blood pressure, jumping into surgery or heavy diagnostics can actually put them at greater risk.

By stabilising them with:
💧 IV fluids
💊 Pain relief or medications
💨 Oxygen
❤️ Careful monitoring

We give their body the best possible chance to handle what comes next — and that can save their life.

It’s not a delay.
It’s essential care.

🦘 Injured wildlife? Here’s what happens next

As Toowoomba’s only 24/7 emergency vet clinic, we see a lot of native wildlife — from birds and possums to kangaroos and echidnas. Every animal is assessed on arrival, and if it can be rehabilitated, it’s transferred to a trained wildlife carer.

💡 When you bring in injured wildlife, you’ll be asked to sign a form. This form allows us to take over responsibility for the animal and pass it on to the right carer.

👉 Once the animal is transferred, we don’t keep your details or the animal’s records. This means we’re unable to provide updates on its recovery — as all care from that point is managed by the carer, not REDvets. We are also not able o give out carer's details for privacy reasons.

We know how much these animals mean to the people who find them, and we truly appreciate your trust. By bringing them in, you’re giving them the best possible chance.
