Dr Alex is heading back home to the UK this month, and we are going to miss her around the clinic! We may have suggested that Queensland winters are basically the same as a UK summer and therefore she'd barely notice the difference, but she didn't buy it 😅

This is what a dislocated hip looks like on X-ray. 👆

See how the ball of the joint has completely popped out of the socket? In a healthy hip, those two sit snugly together. When they don't — your pet knows about it.
Hip dislocations are one of the most painful orthopaedic injuries we see, and they almost always come from trauma — a car accident, a fall, or a collision.
Signs your pet may have dislocated their hip:

🔴 Sudden inability or refusal to bear weight on a back leg
🔴 One leg sitting visibly higher or at an odd angle
🔴 Crying out when touched near the hip or back end
🔴 Dragging a leg or moving very differently than usual

This is a same-night emergency. Hip dislocations can sometimes be corrected without surgery if treated quickly. So the sooner a dislocation is seen, the better the outcome — and the less your pet suffers.

Before you let your dog out for a sniff around the backyard — read this. 🐾
Most pet owners don't realise how many everyday backyard items can send their animal straight to an emergency vet.
Here's what to watch for:
🐌 Snail bait (Metaldehyde) — Looks harmless, smells attractive to dogs. Causes tremors and seizures fast.
🐀 Rat bait (Rodenticide) — Stops the blood from clotting. Symptoms can take 3–5 days to appear, which means many owners don't connect the dots.
🌴 Cycad palm — That classic Queensland garden plant? Highly toxic. The seeds are the most dangerous part but the whole plant is a risk.
🌿 Garden & lawn sprays (Organophosphates) — Don't let your pet walk on freshly treated grass. These chemicals absorb through their paws.

Ever wondered why your pet might need a CT scan?

A CT scan is like taking hundreds of X-rays from different angles and combining them to create incredibly detailed 3D images of your pet's body. It allows us to see things that regular X-rays simply can't.

We may recommend a CT scan when we're investigating:
🦴 Complex fractures
👃 Chronic nasal disease
🫁 Lung conditions
🧠 Neurological problems
🦷 Dental and jaw disease
🎾 Foreign objects hiding where they shouldn't be
🔍 Certain cancers and tumours

Because movement can blur the images, most pets require a general anaesthetic or heavy sedation. While they're asleep, our team carefully positions them on the CT table, monitors them closely throughout the procedure, and acquires the images in just a matter of minutes.

The scan is then reviewed by our veterinarians and, in many cases, specialist radiologists who help us identify exactly what's going on beneath the surface.
Think of CT as giving us a detailed roadmap. The more information we have, the better we can diagnose, plan treatment, and help your pet get back to doing what they do best—being a menace, stealing snacks, and ignoring personal boundaries. ❤️🐾

Some reasons that dogs need cesarean sections include:

🐶 breed disposition
🐶 uterine inertia (the uterus doesn't contract strongly enough)
🐶 puppies are in the wrong position

And sometimes, a puppy is just too big to come out!

These two puppies are from the same litter, how about that size difference?!

If there has been more than 1 hour between pups, we need to see mum to check how everything is going.
