Let’s Chat Dental!! 🦷🪥
Now, you can see three images attached. Firstly, it appears the tooth is covered in tartar, and visually, there doesn’t seem to be any other issues. However, upon closer examination, it was discovered that the tooth is actually broken in half (slab fracture), which is also evident in the X-ray image.
So, enjoy my rambling on dental health…
Oral health is essential to your pet’s overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked. Just like in humans, dental disease in pets can lead to significant health problems, often without any obvious signs.
Dental disease affects the majority of pets: By the age of three, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of dental disease, ranging from mild gingivitis to severe periodontal disease. Plaque begins to form on your pet’s teeth within 24 hours, and if left untreated, it can quickly harden into tartar. Tartar buildup can cause not only bad breath but also severe gum inflammation, tooth loss, and pain.
While tartar is often visible, the issue may go much deeper. Many pets show no obvious symptoms of dental problems even when they are suffering from serious conditions like tooth fractures, abscesses, or infection. The absence of visible pain does not mean the absence of disease.
Dental disease doesn’t just affect the mouth: Untreated dental problems in pets can lead to systemic health issues, including infections that can affect the heart, liver, and kidneys. In fact, the bacteria that thrive in an unhealthy mouth can enter the bloodstream and cause damage to internal organs.
Regularly checking your pet’s teeth and mouth is crucial for identifying potential problems before they become severe. Even if your pet seems to be eating and behaving normally, dental disease may be silently affecting their health. Early detection and treatment can prevent pain, tooth loss, and more serious conditions.
Key Benefits of Pet Dental Care:
• Prevention of gum disease and tooth loss through regular professional cleanings and at-home care.
• Protection against infections that could lead to more serious systemic health issues.
• Reduced treatment costs by addressing problems early.
Dental care isn’t just about keeping your pet’s mouth clean- it’s about ensuring their overall health. By the time noticeable symptoms appear, significant damage may already be done. Taking proactive steps now can help prevent the pain and cost of advanced dental procedures in the future.
