As much as I love my job, shoeing horses, building feet, and crafting horseshoes, I’ve realised over the years that work alone doesn’t quite fill my cup the same way community does.

Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do. Helping horses perform at their best and supporting my clients is something I’m incredibly passionate about. But I’ve also discovered that being part of something bigger, helping people connect, and building a strong community brings a different kind of fulfilment.

That’s why I’m so honoured to be involved with Talk2mebro here on the Gold Coast.

We’re now running regular catch ups, creating a space where people can come together, connect, have meaningful conversations, and simply be around good humans.

To all my amazing clients and friends, if you ever feel the call, come along and join us.

This horse unfortunately had a bit of an accident after standing on a foreign object out in the paddock, which we it believe may have been a piece of glass. The injury eventually resulted in a sequestrum forming, requiring a pedal bone scrape by the veterinary team.

To help protect the foot during recovery, we’ve fabricated a custom hospital plate using alloy checker plate and a welded-in steel bar insert. This design allows ongoing access to the injury site while providing protection and support to the foot.

We’ve also used impression material beneath the shoe. This helps distribute load through the back half of the foot, providing additional support and comfort. Another important benefit is that it seals the area, helping to prevent dirt, dust, shavings, and other contaminants from finding their way under the shoe.

With cases like this, keeping the foot as clean and dry as possible is a huge part of the recovery process.

Cleanliness is friendliness.

A great team effort between farrier and vet to give this horse the best chance of a successful recovery.

Did you know your horse's hooves keep growing their whole life, a bit like our fingernails?
Shoes do a great job protecting the hoof wall from wear, but they cannot guard against everything. The sole, the frog and the soft structures underneath are still exposed, which is why bruising, abscesses and thrush can show up even on a well shod horse.
That is the part people often miss. Shoes are one layer of protection, not a full shield. Healthy hooves come down to the everyday stuff: regular trimming, picking out feet daily, keeping things clean and dry, and catching small changes before they become big ones.
There is an old saying in the game that still holds up. No hoof, no horse.
