I saw a large, red bellied black snake cross my path today. The warmer weather is waking up all the reptiles so be extra careful to keep your dogs on lead when walking in and around bushland and don’t let them explore in tall grass.

Ticks and fleas are also more active now so be sure your dogs are protected with whatever product you’ve chosen.

(This isn’t the actual snake which I saw. I was on my bike and didn’t stop to get acquainted.)

There’s never any reason to hurt a dog to train them. Good trainers know how to reward desired behaviour and manage (not ignore) undesired behaviour.

It's not right to hurt any animal in the name of training...

Senior dogs get bored at home. If they can no longer go on long walks a pram is a wonderful way to make them happy. They can still enjoy all the sights, sounds and smells of the great outdoors.

Keeping your senior pet safe and active

🐶 Utilise runners/mats with a rubber backing on slippery floors to prevent slipping
🐶 Utilise ramps and ladders to help them navigate into the car or couch rather than jumping
🐶 For the car, look at harnesses that can help support their backend and assist you with loading them safely
🐶Raised bowls can help them which their food easier
🐶Keep water bowls easily accessible - having them in multiple locations can help
🐶 Consider a pet pram - allows you to both participate in long walks

If you need help with vet bills, you might qualify for Pet Safety Net. This is newly available in the Hunter Region and Central Coast.

It can help anyone over 18 who receives a Centrelink or Department of Veterans' Affairs payment, holds a Health Care card or Pensioner Concession card and lives in the specified area.

You’ll need to fill out a 12-question eligibility test and you are told within 5 mins if you've been accepted.

If accepted first you get an online vet consultation that's open 24/7, then, if necessary, they'll refer you to the nearest participating vet.

You could qualify for up to $5000 free vet assistance. This lasts for a 30-day period.
