🐶You can help dogs in need by buying SavourLife dry dog food from Petstock, during June.

🐾Approximately 100,000 healthy cats and dogs in Australia are euthanised in council pounds each year. One of the top 3 reasons for pet surrender is financial instability arising through change of circumstance and cost of living.

🐕Providing food support can help a struggling pet parent to be able to keep their beloved dog.

If you need help with vet bills, you might qualify for Pet Safety Net. This is newly available in the Hunter Region and Central Coast.

It can help anyone over 18 who receives a Centrelink or Department of Veterans' Affairs payment, holds a Health Care card or Pensioner Concession card and lives in the specified area.

You’ll need to fill out a 12-question eligibility test and you are told within 5 mins if you've been accepted.

If accepted first you get an online vet consultation that's open 24/7, then, if necessary, they'll refer you to the nearest participating vet.

You could qualify for up to $5000 free vet assistance. This lasts for a 30-day period.

Choice Magazine recently evaluated pet insurance. These are the top 5 overall. Though your needs may not be the average, these companies are worth getting a quote.

Note that pet insurance may not be worth it for you if you have savings to cover emergency costs.

With the recent allegations about dogs and cats being put down for convenience at the privatised Port Stephens Pound, it’s a reminder that taking any animal to a pound is rolling the dice with their future.

If you’re having behaviour issues with your dog, don’t give up, a qualified and experienced dog trainer/behaviourist can help. I’m retired but will be very happy to recommend a force free trainer anywhere in Australia.

Please consider adopting your next companion animal from a pound or rescue group. The animals there are normal and healthy and just need a second chance.

Good news for dogs in Newcastle, NSW, but Lake Macquarie continues to have not enough FENCED dog parks. The only two fenced dog parks in Lake Mac are not safe for small dogs because council refuses to divide them to separate small dogs from medium and large dogs.

Potential good news for dogs in NSW! Proposed changes to animal welfare laws will be presented to parliament in the first half of this year.

If it passes, a loop hole will be closed and prong collars will be banned. Punishment based “trainers” and owners will have to come into the 21st century and actually learn how to train dogs.

There will be new offences for:
🐶 leaving a dog unattended in a hot vehicle.
🐶 using or possessing prong collars. 🎉 These are discredited, cruel and completely unnecessary. They are currently illegal to import but not to own or use?!
🐶 possessing glue traps that (these are already illegal to set).

Plus: Strengthening animal fighting offences, and other changes.

When the bill is presented to parliament we will all need to write to our state reps to ensure it’s passed.

❌Not cute. This dog is showing multiple stress signals: closed mouth, ears back, lip licking, yawning, looking away, and being on the top of the couch as far away as possible.

Parents need to give the dog a safer place to be away from the child such as using baby gates or setting up a large puppy pen with a dog bed, toys, water, etc.

Parents should call the baby away when the dog is showing stress signals. As the child gets older, they should teach the child more appropriate behaviour around the dog. Supervision and separation are essential.

If the adults in the room don't take action to help the dog, the dog may eventually have no choice but to tell the child to stay away, in increasingly less subtle ways.🥺
