VELLA'S BEST, KING OF THE BLACK MOUNTAIN.

Vella's Best put forward another dominant showing to take out today's feature race at Canberra the TAB Federal Black Mountain. A tough, gritty win for the son of Headwater to take his career earnings past $120k now from just the 9 career starts.

Ridden by Louise Day, he came out of the gates first and unable to cross from his wide draw, he sat out 3 wide, vulnerable, but rated beautifully by Louise he just kept finding to the line to put away a very handy field with a little bit of arrogance, and we couldn't be prouder of our little horse!

This gelding by Vinery Stud's Headwater was hand picked by Gratz himself for a very modest $40,000 at the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, which he has now more than tripled in earnings for his connections.

Thank you to all our staff and regular work riders for their hard work at home, all our connections, stable followers, and to Thoroughbred Park for putting together this race, it's a great initiative. Beau Rock (pictured) lands himself in a very winnable race here today from a soft draw. He's hard fit and loves racing over this distance, and expect him to be in the finish here today.
Flashback Time resumed from a break last start and really did put her best work together late to be beaten just under 2 lengths. She will take improvement from what she can show here today as she furthers her campaign.
Nothing Special resumed last start, and was a total forget run. He is a green young horse who will take great benefit from anything he does here today as he learns his craft.
Azzucca has been ever so consistent as she tries gallantly to break her maiden status, and has been rather unlucky to have not done so yet. She draws well and we are hopeful today is her day.
Vella's Best lands in a very hot little race here, and what can we say about the guy. He sprung back in the winners circle with style last start after a dominating win at Moruya. Draws a little wide but all confidence in Louise to offset that.
Sutton Vella lands herself in the same race and she will be one that is happy to land on a drying track. She has drawn well and is very capable of running a cheeky race here.

Race 6 - 4:50 - VELLA FOX Pierre Boudvillain

Vella Fox returns from a break at Kembla Grange this afternoon. He draws a bit sticky but is efficient when resuming. He has come back in great order and is very capable of running a cheeky race with Pierre on board. He will take great improvement from today going forward into his racing preparation.

We're all about mates here at Gratz Vella Racing.

Vella Fox resumes at Kembla Grange on Thursday after a well earned break in the paddock. This sparingly raced now 7 yr old gelding by Foxwedge managed to put up a solid 4th placing in a strong highway race, which also seen his half sister Sutton Vella run 3rd in. He also managed a few minor placings and a nice win at Nowra in that same prep.

Having had just the 15 starts (4-4-0) and banking just shy of 100k for his connections the sky is the limit heading into his 7yr old season as a more mature horse.

We wish his connections all the best with him on Thursday, and into the future.

Prophet Time comes into this off a bottler of a run last start at Canberra where she did her best work late only to be beaten just over a length. She does find a bit of a tricky little race here, but she is a fit mare, and with Quayde on she is capable of running a very cheeky race here with a light weight from a good draw.

Vella Magic (pictured) lands herself in an easier race than she's been contesting, draws the inside for Jess and hopefully with a good run in transit, is capable of finding herself in the finish today.

Stable star Good Prize (Levi) returned to the stables after a well-earned break in the paddock recently.

This Prized Icon gelding really found his love for racing in his 4 yr old year and had an absolutely stellar preparation last prep which seen him manage to put together 4 wins in a row, including the Tuggeranong cup. We then asked him to head to provincial grade at Kembla Grange, where he managed a dominant win, followed by a convincing win in the city midweek at Warwick Farm. We then headed for Saturday class, where he strung together two handy runs before heading out for a well-deserved break.

Now a 5yr old, Levi has managed to bank $151,000 in prize money for his connections, from a modest 19 starts (7-3-1).

We are very excited to see what this campaign has in store for Levi, he has come back in bigger and a more mature horse again, and we wish his connections all the best with him. 🧡🖤

Race 5 -3:20 - AZZUCCA Jack Baker.

Azzucca heads to Goulburn for the first time today. She has been rather unlucky to not break her maiden status thus far. She finds herself contesting a very hot maiden, however, will likely benefit from coming back to a turf track. She has form in the wet, and it shouldn't bother her. She has drawn well and Jack takes 2 off her back, which will only add to her claims today. She's now a 4yo mare, who has matured very nicely these past few months. We're hoping the daughter of Denman can have her day in the sun today!

Race 4 - 2:55 - NOTHING SPECIAL - Quayde Krogh

This gelding by dissident resumes from a break and having his first start for the stable today. Based on what he has contested so far he lands himself in a winnable race. He has drawn well and gains the services of Quayde to help teach him his trade. He'll only improve off what he does here today. Be a nice birthday present for the Boss man to come away with a winner too!

Race 4 -3:10 - VELLA MAGIC Billy Owen

Magic Heads here a hard fit mare. She's strung a few placings together this preparation and finds herself contesting a hot little race. She's drawn well, however like many of her rivals set to carry a big weight. Back onto a drying track, makes her very capable of regaining some form and running a cheeky race. In form Billy Owen on board only adds to her chances here today.
