Today our rescue team attended a property in East Bendigo after an urgent call came in regarding a Swamp Wallaby stuck in a fence.

After a tricky rescue, our Vet Team safely sedated him to allow a full assessment of his injuries and reduce the stress he was experiencing.

Following veterinary examination and X-rays showing no signs of fractures or broken bones, he was placed into care for close observation to monitor for possible nerve damage.

At this stage, we are hopeful he will be able to recover and eventually return to the wild where he belongs.

This Galah was rescued three weeks ago in Eaglehawk after suffering a minor concussion, likely from a collision while moving through her home range.

She was dazed and vulnerable on arrival, unable to properly orient herself and fully reliant on care and support.

After weeks of calm recovery, her strength returned and she was ready to go back home.

Today she was released back into her territory. She paused for a moment, took in the familiar surroundings, called softly, then lifted into the air and circled before flying off strong and free.

Wildlife rescue isn’t easy, but moments like this make it all worth it.

Today, Bendigo Wildlife Rescue received a call about a baby noisy miner (one of our native honeyeaters) hanging by his leg high up in a gum tree.

Our emergency rescue team responded quickly and was able to safely reach the little guy and bring him down to safety 💚

A huge thank you to Eaglehawk Hire for lending us the equipment - without your support, rescues like this simply wouldn’t be possible.

Please don’t cut kangaroos or wildlife out of fencing. Call Wildlife Rescue

If you find a kangaroo or other native animal caught in a fence, it might seem like helping to cut them free. In reality, this can make things much worse.

If the animal runs off with a serious injury, it may suffer for days or die from infection. What looks like a quick rescue can turn into a slow and painful outcome.

In many cases, cutting the fence isn’t needed. Our trained rescuers can assess the situation safely. If required, the animal can be sedated and carefully repositioned, allowing the limb to come free as the tension reduces.

Cutting fences can also create other problems, like livestock escaping or further damage to the property.

💚 For the animal’s welfare and to protect property, please don’t cut the wire.

📞 Call Bendigo Wildlife Rescue or your local wildlife rescue straight away if you see an animal caught in a fence.

Rest easy & fly high little guy 💚

Yesterday we received a call about a Swamp Harrier in Maiden Gully VIC.

These guys are a common bird of prey around Victoria and are often confused with kites and falcons.

Our volunteers went out to find him but after searching the bushland, we just couldn’t locate him.

Today, a member of the public found him sitting by a dam a few hundred metres away from where he was first seen. Our rescuers attended and were able to safely capture him.

When we got to him, he didn’t put up a fight. For a bird of prey, that’s always a really worrying sign and we knew something wasn’t right.

We found a necrotic looking wound on his wing, and X-rays confirmed multiple breaks along with a serious infection.

As hard as it is, the kindest thing we could do was to humanely euthanise him and end his suffering.

Such a beautiful animal, gone too soon, but no longer in pain 💚

Not an easy rescue…

Today, Bendigo Wildlife Rescue received a call about a galah entangled high up in netting.

Trapped with no way to escape, the poor little one was in a dangerous situation and urgently needed help.

Thanks to the quick response and determination of our volunteers and the assistance of members from the Country Fire Authority (CFA), we were able to safely reach and free the bird.

The galah is now in care and being assessed for any injuries.

Off goes Wally! (Release video in comments)

Bendigo Wildlife Rescue responded to a call from a concerned property owner after a wombat was found sheltering in their garden shed with suspected mange.

Rescuer Jordon attended and safely captured the little guy, bringing him back for assessment. Thankfully, this wasn’t mange and the marks you see are from a tussle with another wombat.

Today, Wally was released back where he was found by Glenys and our newest volunteer, Sarah.

Not a bad first job at all, a wombat release! 😊
We hope you enjoyed the experience Sarah!

Good luck out there, Wally 💚
