🦘💕 HOW AWESOME IS THIS— TWIN JOEYS! 💕🦘
Something you definitely don’t see every day! Just like humans, kangaroos can have twins, although it is quite rare.
A concerned member contacted us after spotting this mumma, wondering whether both joeys would fit as they grow and whether she could successfully care for two without assistance, the answer is
▪️Kangaroo pouches are incredibly stretchy and flexible, you’d be surprised what can fit in there!
▪️Female kangaroos have four teats inside their pouch.
▪️Mum can produce different milk for joeys at different stages of development.
▪️Kangaroos can even pause the development of an embryo until conditions are right which is called embryonic diapause.
▪️Twins are uncommon, making this a pretty special sight!
Mumma roos are incredibly clever and well adapted to raising their young. Nature really is amazing! 🥹🦘🦘❤️

Have you seen twin joeys before in the wild

🎉❤️ HAPPY BIRTHDAY SARAH! ❤️🎉
This is Sarah, and today is her birthday… yet here she is, still out rescuing wildlife! 🦘❤️ If that doesn’t show dedication, love and passion for our beautiful wildlife, we don’t know what does.
Sarah hasn’t been with Bendigo Wildlife Rescue for all that long, but wow, has she made an incredible impression on us already! From day one, she has been eager to help, always offering to tag along, learn something new and lend a hand wherever she can.
She may be a shy soul, but don’t let that fool you! 😂 When it comes to protecting and standing up for our wildlife, Sarah certainly isn’t afraid to speak her mind — and we absolutely love that about her. ❤️
Her kindness, willingness to learn and genuine love for animals shines through in everything she does, and we feel incredibly lucky to have her as part of our team.
Sarah, we hope you have the most amazing birthday. Thank you for everything you already do and for even spending your special day helping wildlife in need.
Happy Birthday from your wildlife family at Bendigo Wildlife Rescue! ❤️🦘🎂
We’re so lucky to have you! ❤️❤️

Today, Bendigo Wildlife Rescue received an urgent call from a member of the public regarding a Grey-headed Flying Fox hanging from a tree over a body of water.

Rescuers Lyam & Avery quickly responded, with the handy cherry-picker in tow, proudly provided by our mates at Eaglehawk Hire! 🙌 Thank you so much guys!

On arrival, the young female was found hanging from the tree with a fishing hook lodged in her wing and attached to stray fishing line. 🎣

Although the injury looks quite serious, she has been safely rescued and we’re hopeful she’ll make a smooth recovery. ❤️‍🩹

A huge thank you to the member of the public who spotted her and called for help. Your quick action made all the difference.

Please remember: discarded fishing line and hooks can be deadly for our wildlife. Always take your fishing line, hooks and tackle home with you and dispose of them responsibly.

🦇 Compassion in Action.

4-Hour Sugar Glider Rescue! 💚

A local NBN maintenance crew got quite the surprise when they found four sugar gliders sheltering inside a telecommunications cable pit.

While some were safely freed from the pit, the others disappeared into one of the underground conduits connected to the telecommunications pole.

The workers soon realised the pipes were freezing cold and contained water, raising concerns the gliders could become hypothermic or trapped.

Bendigo Wildlife Rescue responded, and after four hours of patience and teamwork with the NBN crew, we successfully rescued all four gliders.

A huge thank you to the NBN maintenance workers for stopping work and calling us straight away, your quick actions made all the difference.

💚 A special thank you to our amazing volunteer Sarah, because she didn’t give up, this little family got a second chance.

With every injured female kangaroo we rescue, there's often a tiny life depending on her. Whether a little joey is already poking its head out or still quietly tucked away in her pouch, there's always the possibility of a precious surprise inside a beautiful reminder of why every rescue matters, whether that little one is viable or not.
This poor sweetheart was found on a quiet back road after being left to suffer for who knows how long. No animal deserves to endure that kind of pain alone.

Please, if you hit a kangaroo or come across one that's injured, make the call. Accidents happen but leaving them behind to suffer doesn't have to. We only need the location and a few details, and you don't have to stay on the phone for long.

These beautiful animals deserve compassion. Imagine you lying on the side of the road, injured, frightened, and in pain, waiting and hoping that someone would stop to help. Be that person and please call it in whether you like these animals or not, Don’t be that heartless person . 📞 1300 970 609 🦘

We often get asked the question:
“How long will you take to get here?”
Here’s our answer.

Every call to Bendigo Wildlife Rescue is different. When you contact our Wildlife Rescue Coordinators / Call-takers, they’ll ask a series of questions to assess the animal’s condition and determine how urgent the situation is.

Based on the information you provide, your call will be assigned one of the three priority categories shown below. This helps ensure animals with the most critical injuries receive the fastest possible response.

While we always aim to respond within the expected timeframes, factors such as volunteer availability, weather, traffic, multiple emergencies and travel distance may occasionally affect response times.

Every call matters. Every animal matters. Every life matters.

🦘 **Joeys, joeys & more joeys!** 🦘

Mumma’s are on the move, and our wildlife rescuers are already seeing an increase in orphaned joeys.

Please keep an eye out on the roads, especially at dawn, dusk, and during the night. Slow down, stay alert, and remember to check the pouch if you hit a kangaroo or wallaby only if it is strictly ‘SAFE’ to do so, if unsure call our phone on 📞1300 970 609 and one our friendly volunteers can help assist you through the process or attend.

Together, we can help save our precious wildlife. ❤️

You may have noticed we’ve been a little quieter than usual on our social media channels lately.

Our volunteers have been incredibly busy responding to sick, injured, orphaned and impacted native wildlife across the region.

So far this year, our team has received more than 600 requests for assistance, all managed by just 13 dedicated volunteers. Their commitment, compassion and countless volunteer hours make it possible for us to continue helping wildlife in need every day.

The good news is that support for our organisation continues to grow. Over the past few weeks, we have received nine new volunteer applications, and we are hopeful of welcoming more volunteers to the team in the coming months.

To everyone who follows, supports, donates to, and advocates for our work, thank you. Your ongoing support allows us to continue providing assistance to native wildlife when they need it most.

Together, we’re making a difference for Victoria’s wildlife, one rescue at a time. 🦘🦉🐨

Crissy is such a valued part of the Bendigo Wildlife Rescue family. Between the busy life of being a mum and everything else life throws her way, she still gives so much time, compassion, and dedication to helping our native wildlife. Thank you for all the hard work, kindness, late nights, rescues, and support you give to our team and the animals who need it most. We are so lucky to have you as part of our crew.
Wishing you the happiest birthday today, Crissy! We hope your day is as beautiful and caring as you are ❤️🎉🎂
