🌸 WHAT IS YOUR CAT TRYING TO TELL YOU? 🐱💬
Cats have quite the vocabulary — and once you start listening, you realise not every meow is the same! 😂
A cat’s meow doesn’t have one exact translation. The sound, situation, body language and your individual cat all help tell you what they may be trying to communicate.
🐾 Short Meow — Can simply be a friendly little “hello”, acknowledgement or request for attention.
🐾 Repeated Meows — Often means they’re excited or really want your attention. Hello… I’m talking to you! 😂
🐾 Long, Drawn-Out Meow — Can be a more insistent request. Dinner late? Door closed? Something not quite to their liking? You may hear about it!
🐾 Chirps & Trills — These gorgeous little sounds are often friendly and excited. Mother cats also use trills with their kittens, and some cats use them to encourage their humans to follow them.
🐾 Soft Meow — Often a gentle request, greeting or quiet little check-in. Some cats naturally have much softer voices than others.
🐾 Low-Pitched Meow — Can signal annoyance, frustration or dissatisfaction. Basically, “Excuse me, I have a complaint.” 😂
🐾 High-Pitched Meow — Can happen with excitement, urgency, fear or discomfort. A sudden change in your cat’s normal voice or excessive vocalising is worth paying attention to.
🐾 Chattering — That funny little ek-ek-ek sound many cats make while watching birds or other prey. It’s thought to be connected with excitement and their hunting instincts.
🐾 The Silent Meow — My favourite! ❤️ Their mouth opens… but nothing comes out, or perhaps just the tiniest squeak. Often used as a gentle greeting or request for attention.
The most important thing is knowing your own cat’s normal. Over time, we learn their little sounds, expressions and routines — and somehow they become very good at training us to understand exactly what they want! 😂🐱
