What's the buzz? It's National Agriculture Day! Agricultural pollination services are critical for many of our exotic horticultural species getting fruit, vegetables and tree nuts, pasture crops from paddock to your plate everyday. Of course honey is the sweet reward from honeybees from their hive to our tables. Buy local, support local producers. 🐝 🍎🍊🥕

This year, we decided against taking our hives to almond pollination in Victoria's Sunraysia. The risk of varroa too great and the financial reward too little. A good decision considered our preparation has been impacted by a myriad of family health issues over the past 3 months. Wishing everyone safe travels as they move bees in the next few weeks. A few snaps from our almond pollination experiences over the past few years. 🐝

We've been a bit quiet on socials lately. Some unexpected family health issues with this bloke have given us a bit of a scare. While things aren't back to normal yet and Scott's recovery is progressing, we thank everyone who has reached out with offers of support and for your understanding (especially if your honey orders are a bit late or you don't see us at the Ballarat Farmers Market this month). We are both very grateful. 🙏

🥧 VOTE 1 for Lilly's delicious pie in this years fabulous Ballarats Best Pie comp featuring our very own honey!

On the menu at Not Your Grandma's Pantry is barbecue duck char siu & pineapple tart pie.

A flaky, buttery crust made with Inglenook Dairy butter wraps tender Luv-a-Duck duck cooked in spices, caramelised shallots and topped with spiced pineapple jam.

The pie is seasoned with The 5th Season artisan salt and finished with a traditional hand-latticed crust (extra crumble) inspired by Malaysia’s beloved pineapple tart.

It's served with a punchy mandarin ginger sambal, sweetened with Backyard Beekeeping Ballarat honey.

Noticed some early budding near Avoca while planting out our first botanicals at our new enterprise, Peerick Farm Botanicals. In went some gorgeous Banksa ericifolia (Heath-Leaved Banksia) and Kunzea baxteri var. Persian Pink.

We'll be growing a small number of botanicals for fresh cut flowers, while we establish our trial juniper berry site for our fabulous friends who distil gin. Of course, our beautiful bees will also be a feature.
