Sitting at Avoca Pub contemplating our treatment plan now we have detected Varroa destructor in our beehives. Although it was inevitable, its still a shock when you see them in the varroa checker. Value the training and expertise offered by those beekeepers who have gone before us in managing the mite. 🐝

πŸƒ Growing endemic species in your own backyard for revegetation projects like the TreeProject (see dets below) is something both meaningful and achievable to help mitigate the impacts of climate change.

🌱Today potting on summer raised seedlings (around 100 so far) for autumn planting across Central Victoria. Tiny Hop Wattles, Black Sheoks and Melaleucas. Tube stock is also distributed to our own local Urban Ripple Project.

🌿 If you are feeling overwhelmed about the state of the world (including Varroa destructor🐝) consider volunteering for the TreeProject.

Our last Introduction to Beekeeping Course today with lucky new beekeepers having the opportunity to indulge in our beaut Satuma plum crop. Its been a bumper plum and apricot season for our espaliered fruit trees. A special note of gratitude for our wonderful bees which have provided such effective pollination. 🐝

Continued hot and dry weather for our beehives in the Pyrenees. Weekly fresh water refills for our stock troughs. With their little red gum branch acting as the perfect bee (& other insect and wildlife) ladder. πŸͺœ

The landscape around the Pyrenees is parched. We're watering our beehives and juniper berries at near Avoca hoping and praying that each alert we receive is a 'small and safe' fire notification. We've been lucky so far, unlike so many primary producer families and townships across our state. Our eldest son spent his Saturday night blacking out at Streatham, which has been badly impacted. Thanks to all the wonderful CFA Volunteers and emergency services.

We've been a little quite on socials lately. For us 2025 has provided some health and family challenges including a couple of curve balls which derailed some of our long awaited travel plans. We've spent time reevaluating our somewhat hectic work/life commitments and made some tough decisions.

We have sold most of our beehives, retaining around 20 for small scale honey production and delivery of our education and training courses. By June 2026 we will close our online beekeeping supplies store.

We will still be selling honey to all our local retailers, Ballarat Farmers Market and through The Honey Locker Urban Farmgate.

As we rightsize our beekeeping enterprise we are embarking on a new endeavour, growing juniper berries and botanicals at our property at Avoca.

You'll find most of hives amongst the gums of the Pyreenees soon.

PS. Did you know that hoverflies are excellent pollinators?

What's the buzz? It's National Agriculture Day! Agricultural pollination services are critical for many of our exotic horticultural species getting fruit, vegetables and tree nuts, pasture crops from paddock to your plate everyday. Of course honey is the sweet reward from honeybees from their hive to our tables. Buy local, support local producers. 🐝 🍎🍊πŸ₯•

This year, we decided against taking our hives to almond pollination in Victoria's Sunraysia. The risk of varroa too great and the financial reward too little. A good decision considered our preparation has been impacted by a myriad of family health issues over the past 3 months. Wishing everyone safe travels as they move bees in the next few weeks. A few snaps from our almond pollination experiences over the past few years. 🐝

We've been a bit quiet on socials lately. Some unexpected family health issues with this bloke have given us a bit of a scare. While things aren't back to normal yet and Scott's recovery is progressing, we thank everyone who has reached out with offers of support and for your understanding (especially if your honey orders are a bit late or you don't see us at the Ballarat Farmers Market this month). We are both very grateful. πŸ™
