Every pigeon wants a safe, loving home.

But the sad reality is that “ordinary” pigeons are often overlooked in favour of fancier breeds.

Personality, however, has nothing to do with looks.

Some of the most affectionate, loyal, funny little companions aren’t fancy birds. They’re the plain-looking former street pigeons who are just happy someone gave them a chance.

So if you’re ever considering adoption, please don’t overlook the “ordinary” ones.

Give a feral pigeon a chance. You might just find your new best friend.

23 pigeons, 3 canaries, 2 lovebirds, and a 290km round trip.

Last weekend, we partnered with Pigeon Rescue Support Inc and Bendigo Animal Welfare & Community Services to help with a big rescue run.

An older gentleman's partner had passed and left behind her birds. When he was admitted to hospital long-term, he could no longer provide the care they needed.

A neighbour had been keeping the birds fed, but caring for dozens of birds isn't an easy task, especially on a country property where 'next door' isn't within arm's reach.

Along with Pigeon Rescue Support, we helped assess and triage all of the pigeons, then safely loaded them into carriers to their next destination.

Our role was only small, but I want to say a big thank you to:

Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue for taking the lovebirds and canaries
Lazzi's Legacy Bird Rescue & Sanctuary for assessing and holding the lovebirds and canaries
Freckle’s Fellowship Pigeon Rescue and Musical Gully Wings & Wildlife Sanctuary Inc for taking the pigeons

And lastly, thank you to my partner, the long-suffering rescue chauffeur who didn’t complain once when I told him we would be up before dawn on a Saturday to galavant around the state for some pigeons.

Tofu is a sensitive bird who came into care after getting injured and lost.

Tofu was absolutely terrified of humans when he first arrived, but has made some good progress since joining the sanctuary flock. He no longer hides in terror and even gives me the occasional head nod!

Tofu isn't a cuddly pigeon but would thrive with a special owner who is ready to take a gentle, patient approach to helping him continue to rebuild trust.

Tofu would be happiest with another feathered friend (or a flock!)

Current signs point to Tofu being male, but this has not been confirmed. DNA s*xing is available at-cost, if required.

Did you know that unexpected tameness can be a sign that a pigeon is unwell?

Often, a kind person will find a pigeon and comment that it is very tame. They understandably assume it must be a pet because the pigeon is allowing them to hold or pat them.

But pigeons don't always show distress in the same way we do.

Signs can be subtle and easily missed, which can result in delays in urgently-needed care.

So what are some less obvious signs that a pigeon may be injured or unwell?

- Fluffed up for long periods
- Sitting on the ground and reluctant to move
- Closed or half-closed eyes
- Heavy or laboured breathing, or tail bobbing
- Trouble standing, walking, or balancing
- Reluctance or inability to fly
- A droopy wing
- Feather displacement, which can indicate an injury hidden under the feathers

This list isn't exhaustive, but if you notice a pigeon showing any of these signs, please contain the bird and contact a pigeon-friendly vet or rescue.

Pikelet is available for adoption!

If you’ve been following the page for a while, you might remember Pikelet - the bird removed from a roof along with their sibling.

When the sibling disappeared overnight and the parents didn't come back, Pikelet came into care.

They’ve since grown into a very inquisitive little bird. While they’re not a fan of hands, if I’m in the aviary, Pikelet is usually perched on the shelf behind me, staring like this 👁️👄👁️

Pikelet is also a big fan of “hairdressing.” By which I mean they’ll happily stand on your head, enthusiastically rearrange your hair, and leave you wondering why you bothered getting ready in the first place.

Pikelet would make a wonderful companion pigeon or a lovely addition to a predator-proof loft or aviary.

Pikelet’s s*x hasn’t been confirmed, though we suspect female. DNA s*xing can be arranged for a small fee if required.

Compact Disc (CD) was found cold, hungry, and emaciated.

While it’s usually best not to interfere with young birds, in this instance CD wasn't going to make it without help.

As I was juggling a few intensive cases at the time, once CD was stabilised and cleared of any major health issues, she was transferred into the care of two trusted local pigeon keepers to continue her rehab.

Under their care, CD gained weight and strength.

After quarantine, one of their rescue pigeons - Mr Jingles - took CD under his wing.

Now, the two are inseparable.

From a starving, lonely bub to thriving with her own flock and best friend. CD's life has been turned around completely.

Thank you to Chase and Keith for providing her care and a soft place to land. You're angels.

I hope, in your final hours, you experienced something different.

Soft hands. Quiet voices. A world that was kind to you, even if only for a moment.

You weren’t 'vermin'.

Your life mattered.

You were worth the late nights, the early mornings, the stress and the tears.

I remember you all.
