PARVOVIRUS OUTBREAK IN BALLARAT

There have been reports of parvovirus (“parvo”) in dogs located in Ballarat. It is possible that a hotspot location of outbreak is the Sebastopol dog park.
Please ensure your dogs are up to date with their C5 vaccinations – one component of this vaccination protects against Parvovirus which is very harmful, very contagious and can be fatal.

What is Parvovirus?

Parvovirus is a gastrointestinal virus which causes severe disease. Signs of parvo:
• Foul smelling diarrhoea which is often bloody
• Vomiting
• Nausea and inappetence
• Severe dehydration due to fluid loss and reduced eating / drinking.
• A dog that is very unwell / flat / lethargic.
• Fast deterioration.
Animals with parvovirus become severely unwell and require serious supportive care to overcome this disease. Even with intensive care some animals will still pass away.

How do dogs catch Parvo?

The virus particles are shed in the faeces of infected dogs. NOTE that faeces can be infectious even before the dog passing faeces is showing any parvo symptoms. It is then transmitted to a new dog when they ingest the particles.
The virus is very contagious and very stable in the environment. The virus particles can only be killed by extreme disinfection methods e.g. via bleach. Your dog does NOT need to be in contact with other dogs to get parvo. Virus particles can be carried on contaminated surfaces, like your own clothes and shoes. And virus particles can exist in the environment for years.

How to prevent Parvo:

Yearly vaccinations protect against Parvovirus. Please ensure your dog is up to date.
Note that humans and other animals cannot catch parvovirus (but could bring it into the household).
Avoid high traffic dog areas and being around dogs with unknown vaccination status.
Be very cautious about taking your puppies out in public until 10 days after their final vaccination.

I got to give a first time wash and blow dry to these two beautiful baby boys on the weekend! I'm lucky enough to groom some beautiful poodles for a lovely local breeder and these two boys were absolutely amazing to do!! They are still looking for their humans and I believe they will make the best pets!! I would also be happy to take them on as regular clients as they were just amazing to do!
