QLD Guinea Pig Refuge

QLD Guinea Pig Refuge QLD Guinea Pig Refuge is a not for profit organisation, dedicated to helping mistreated, abused and no longer wanted guinea pigs in need.

We don't have an actual shelter. All our guinea pigs live on foster carer throughout Brisbane. We hire out the local Scout Den on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month to hold our Open Days

If you are looking to adopt, you must fill out an adoption form 48 hours before Open Day.

🐹 Is your guinea pig a little bit… CHONKY?
Guinea pigs are supposed to have a bit of a belly! ❤️

Sometimes what looks like “being fat” is simply a guinea pig looking exactly like a guinea pig should.

👀 Don’t judge their health by looks alone, weigh them!

⚖️ Regularly monitoring your guinea pig’s weight in grams is one of the best ways to keep track of their health and notice changes early.

As a general guide:

🩵 Boars (boys): 900–1500 g
🩷 Sows (girls): 700–1100 g

But remember, every guinea pig is different, and their ideal weight can vary depending on their size, age and individual build. The trend over time is often more useful than one number.

🐹 Got a tummy? Don’t panic, weigh the pig!

📅 We’ll have scales available at our Open Day, so bring your piggies along and we can help you weigh them and check that you’re comfortable monitoring their weight at home.

🚨 If you’re concerned about your guinea pig’s weight, appetite, behaviour, or overall health, please see your vet.

💙 AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION 💙

Here are Hot dog, Steak & Burger. A boisterous, bonded trio of 8 month old boys. They popcorn and do a piggy train of zoomies when their house is clean and rearranged for them to explore. They love cuddles and all have lovely velvet smooth coats. These boys have been together their whole lives and have been closely monitored and show absolutely no aggression towards each other at all. They will however require a minimum of a 2x5 C&C cage to ensure it stays that way.

It’s that time of year again, where it’s sorta cold and sorta warm.

And your critters can feel it too!

Guinea pigs are sensitive to temperature extremes. They can struggle in both hot and cold conditions, so keeping their environment stable is important.

We recommend guinea pigs live indoors, where their temperature and environment can be monitored and controlled more easily.

But here are some things to look out for, just in case:

🌡️ Monitor the temperature regularly, particularly during heatwaves, very cold weather, and overnight. A room thermometer can help you keep track.

☀️ Signs your guinea pig may be too hot: rapid or laboured breathing, lethargy, weakness, drooling, lying stretched out, or appearing unusually quiet or unresponsive. Heat stress can become an emergency quickly.

🥶 Signs they may be too cold: shivering, huddling tightly, cold ears or feet, lethargy, weakness, or reduced activity and appetite.

☀️ If they’re hot: move them to a cool, well-ventilated area, provide fresh water, and use safe cooling methods such as a cool ceramic tile or wrapped cool pack that they can move away from. Avoid sudden extreme cooling or placing them directly in ice-cold water.

❄️ If they’re cold: move them somewhere warmer and draught-free and provide gentle warmth, ensuring they can move away from the heat source. Avoid direct contact with hot water bottles, heat packs or heating elements, as burns can occur.

❤️ Know your guinea pig: changes in behaviour, eating, breathing or activity can be early signs that something isn't right.
