This is what being disqualified looks like 🏆❤️😁🐶 … pure joy! Check out my previous post to see our first competition run where we got an NQ because I stuffed up the start 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ dog sport has taught me the biggest lesson: just do fun s**t with your dog! Don’t worry so much about winning, just enjoy your dog while he enjoys himself. Their lives are short. Make them fulfilling ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Something I’ve learned from doing dog sport: it doesn’t matter if you don’t win. Yeah it’s disappointing but our dogs have a good time and that’s what I’ve learned to appreciate.

We’ve been doing agility for a few years and today we did our first beginners comp for realsies.

Guess what? Otto did excellent while MY mistake at the first jump meant we got disqualified.

I reset him when he false started instead of continuing the run and it meant he went backwards over the jump. But aside from resetting him on a couple of jumps he absolutely nailed the rest of the course!

And even though we got an NQ guess what? He had the BEST time and that’s what I treasure most.

Sure I would have loved to qualify but it’s not what matters to my dog and it also gives me something to work on for future comps 🐶🏆❤️😁

Dogs need exercise but they need to use their brains too. When it was pouring with rain last week we stayed indoors and messed around like this 😂 the filming isn’t great, yep I should have set the tripod up 🤦‍♀️ I’m using verbal cues only. You will see he does down instead of sit and I move into his space which uses spacial pressure and then he sits. I also repeat a couple of “spin” commands as I made the judgement call to help him, sometimes the spin vs turn gets confused so I made that call, whereas normally I try to avoid using a command more than once. Such a good boy 🐶😁

We’re making progress with Darcy doing left and right (I say rechts and links which is German), I’ve been reducing my hand cue and making it smaller as eventually I’d like her to do this on verbal only.

When you’re teaching your dog a skill or trick and you’ve used hand signals to cue the behaviour you want, but you want to start introducing a verbal command, you need to deliver the verbal cue a second before the hand signal (not at the same time).

This is because visual cues are more salient to dogs (who are not verbal animals like us) but it’s hard for us humans to do because when we talk we communicate with our hands at the same time and not afterwards, so it can feel awkward and you might not get it right every time. I certainly don’t! It’s something that takes practice.

I’m happy with how this has come along so far. We don’t train it every day and shes an older dog too so it may take her longer to learn than my younger dogs.

It’s a bit of fun, keeps her brain active and we both enjoy it.

After doing the crate exercise I had a go of trying the concept with a place stay. Not bad for the first time ever doing this! This doesn’t mean Frank knows place stay or to wait his turn 100% yet but it’s an excellent first go. We will need to get lots of repetition getting it right under low distraction before we make it more challenging for him (like expecting him to do this in the yard outside) ❤️

When I train Otto and Darcy they know to wait until their turn without being tethered. Frank doesn’t have a place stay yet, we’re working on it. As part of building this behaviour for him (and because it’s pouring and we need something to do) I started on this using the crate to build the concept. I’m using verbal cues, rewards and reinforcement, but I’m also verbally correcting and using spacial pressure to show him where he goes wrong. This is the very first time we’ve had a go at this and I’m very happy with how he did! Smart little man ❤️🐶🌟

Recall fun with Frank. I like to make a big deal about him coming back by being silly and playing, running around a bit, getting him to chase treats, and I also give several individual treats one after a other so that coming back leads to a “reward event” that lasts several seconds! Here I have him on a 10m line and there’s football at the park behind where my phone is set up so there’s a fair bit of distraction. He also hasn’t been to this park often so there’s lots of smells too. His recall is coming along nicely but this is still very early days and it’s a long way from him getting to go off leash 😄

When your dogs are crate trained and eat in their specific crates but two of the crates are closed and you approach holding breakfast 😂😂😂 too good not to share

Dogs learning to chill in stimulating environments is so important but can be hard to find the time to do on top of other things you’re working on. Today was a good reminder for us to work on this more often! He took a long time to settle - this is on me, I’ve been lax in making sure this is a regular part of his training program.
