When your puppy bites your hands during play, refrain from screaming (it sounds like a squeaky toy to them!).
Instead, remain calml, remove your hands, and immediately offer an acceptable chew toy. If biting continues, redirect your puppy to a different activity or help them settle in for a nap.

Pushing or yelling at a jumping puppy often feels like a fun game to them!

A common recommendation is to turn your back on your puppy, or to follow the old advice of lifting your knee, pinching your dog's paws, or throwing them off you.

First we need to understand why our dogs jump up. Jumping is a great strategy to receive attention and physical contact with humans.
Jumping up is a self-rewarding behaviour and can be difficult to teach your dog an alternative behaviour once they have become accustomed to jumping.

What can you do?
1. Teach an alternative behaviour. Four feet or sitting when people arrive is just as rewarding.
2. Pattern games such as up-down. Prompt the alternative before the jump occurs and deliver high-value rewards at ground level.
3. Management. Prevent rehearsing the unwanted behaviour during training. Use baby gates, tethers, or short leashes during high-arousal moments like arrivals. You can also scatter treats on the ground immediately upon entering so their nose and paws stay down before the impulse to jump kicks in.

6 Things I'm 100% buying again for my next puppy!
1. Treats, build good habits from the start
2. Toy rope, a small rope to carry around to help with the teething redirection.
3. Play pen, having a safe space.
4. Enrichment toys, mental stimulation is important.
5. Teething toys, puppies chew a lot, especially when teething. Having safe things to chew can help to save your furniture.
6. Enzyme cleaner is a non-negotiable for the inevitable accident.

Forcing your puppy to meet every dog or person on a leash creates frustrated excitability or fear. True socialisation is exposure without reaction. Teaching your puppy the world isn't scary and to be focused on you while observing the world from a safe distance.

Watching her turn on a dime and sprint back to me never gets old. We didn't achieve this through harsh corrections; we built it by making coming back to me better than anything else in the environment. Start close, reward big, and never call your puppy over just to end their fun!
