FEEDING ROUTINE

Routine Matters: The Importance Of Consistent Feeding

When and how you feed matters just as much as what you feed ⏰

Pets thrive on routine, and feeding schedules play a major role in digestion, metabolism, and overall behaviour. Irregular feeding can lead to digestive upset, anxiety, or overeating. At Eldoraigne Animal Clinic, we recommend consistent feeding times tailored to your pet’s age and lifestyle.

Portion control is equally important, as overfeeding is one of the leading causes of obesity. Using measured portions and appropriate diets helps maintain a healthy weight. Our online store offers feeding tools and balanced diets that support routine-based care. Structure creates stability and stability supports health. 🧡

Quote: “We are what we repeatedly do.” – Aristotle
Fun Fact: Dogs are creatures of habit and quickly adapt to feeding routines.
Top Tip: Feed at the same times each day to support digestion and behaviour.

BEHAVIOUR CHANGES

When Behaviour Speaks: Recognising Subtle Changes

Your pet may not speak, but they always communicate 🐾

Changes in behaviour are often one of the earliest signs that something isn’t right. Increased aggression, withdrawal, excessive vocalisation, or changes in eating habits can all indicate stress, pain, or illness. At Eldoraigne Animal Clinic, we always encourage owners to trust their instincts, if something feels off, it’s worth investigating.

Tracking behaviour patterns can help identify trends and provide valuable information during a vet visit. Environmental enrichment, routine stability, and early intervention all play a role in maintaining behavioural health. Our online store includes enrichment and calming products that can support behavioural balance. Understanding behaviour is key to understanding your pet. 🧡

Quote: “What we observe is not nature itself, but nature exposed to our method of questioning.” – Werner Heisenberg

Fun Fact: Behaviour changes are often the first sign of pain in pets.
Top Tip: Keep a simple journal of unusual behaviours to share with your vet.

MICROCHIPPING

A Tiny Chip, A Lifelong Safety Net

If your pet got lost today, would they find their way home? 🏠

Microchipping is one of the simplest and most effective ways to ensure your pet can be reunited with you if they go missing. Unlike collars or tags, a microchip is permanent and cannot be removed or lost. At Eldoraigne Animal Clinic, we strongly recommend microchipping as part of responsible pet ownership.

However, a microchip is only as effective as the information linked to it. Keeping your contact details updated is essential. Combining microchipping with visible collars, leads & ID tags - available through our online store - provides an extra layer of protection. It’s a small step that can make a life-changing difference. 🧡

Quote: “The best protection is preparation.” – Dwight D. Eisenhower

Fun Fact: Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice.
Top Tip: Update your details whenever you move or change numbers.

NUTRITION

Growing bodies need the right nutrition

🥣 Good nutrition during the first year of life lays the foundation for lifelong health.

Puppies and kittens have very different nutritional requirements to adult pets. They need carefully balanced diets that support healthy bone development, muscle growth, brain function and a strong immune system.

Overfeeding can be just as harmful as underfeeding, which is why choosing the right food and feeding the correct amount is so important. As your pet grows, their nutritional needs will change, and regular weight checks help ensure they remain on the right track.

Healthy growth isn't about growing quickly. It's about growing well 🧡

📍 Not sure if you're feeding the right food or the right amount?
📞 Our team can help you choose the best nutritional plan for every stage of life.

EAR CARE

Listen Closely: The Importance of Ear Health

Head shaking or scratching? It could be more than irritation 👂

Ear problems are common in both dogs and cats, especially in breeds with floppy ears or those prone to allergies. Signs like head shaking, scratching, odour, or discharge can indicate infections or mites. At Eldoraigne Animal Clinic, we often see ear issues that could have been prevented with routine care and early attention.

Regular ear checks and gentle cleaning help prevent build-up and infection. It’s important to use only vet-approved products, as incorrect cleaning can cause more harm than good. Our online store offers safe ear care solutions to support ongoing hygiene. Keeping ears clean and dry is a simple way to avoid discomfort and more serious complications. 🧡

Quote: “Attention to detail is the key to excellence.” – Heraclitus

Fun Fact: Dogs have much deeper ear canals than humans, making them more prone to infections.

Top Tip: Never use cotton buds inside your pet’s ear canal.

THEY CAN’T TELL US THEY’RE TOO COLD. WE HAVE TO NOTICE. 🧡

Extreme weather asks us to pay a little more attention to the animals in our care.

A dog may normally choose to sleep outside. A cat may usually disappear into the garden for hours. But icy temperatures, cold wind and persistent rain change the conditions they are accustomed to.

For the duration of this cold spell, give your pets the option of a warm, protected indoor space and check on them regularly.

Feel their bedding. Is it dry?

Notice where they are sleeping. Is the floor cold?

Check older pets. Are they moving comfortably?

After they have been outside, are their coat and paws wet?

And if your pet seems unusually quiet, weak, distressed or simply not themselves, pay attention to that change.

The Gentle Care Approach™ is not only something that happens inside Eldoraigne Animal Clinic. It is a way of thinking about animal care: observing carefully, reducing unnecessary discomfort and responding to what each animal needs.

This winter, that gentle care extends to your home too. 🐾

EXTREME COLD: PLEASE BRING THEM INSIDE 🐾

With icy weather, rain and exceptionally low temperatures affecting Gauteng and much of the country, please remember that our pets feel the cold too.

During very cold weather, dogs and cats should have access to a warm, dry and sheltered space indoors, particularly overnight. A kennel or covered patio may provide shelter, but when temperatures drop significantly, it may simply not provide enough protection from the cold.

A few simple things can make a big difference:

• Bring pets indoors wherever possible, especially at night.
• Provide warm, dry bedding and extra blankets.
• Keep beds away from cold floors, draughts and damp areas.
• Dry wet coats and paws thoroughly after being outside.
• Limit unnecessary time outdoors during rain, wind and extreme cold.
• Pay particular attention to puppies, kittens, senior pets, small breeds, short-haired animals and pets with existing health conditions.

The Gentle Care Approach™ extends beyond our practice. It is also about helping you create comfort, safety and wellbeing for your pets at home. 🧡

Sometimes gentle care is as simple as a warm bed, a dry blanket and a place beside you.

Skin & Coat Health

Healthy Skin, Happy Pet: What the Coat Reveals

Your pet’s coat can tell you more than you think 🐕

A shiny coat and healthy skin are often the first visible signs of good overall health. Dryness, excessive shedding, itching, or dull fur can indicate underlying issues such as allergies, parasites, or nutritional imbalances. At Eldoraigne Animal Clinic, we regularly assess coat condition as part of a full health evaluation, because small external changes often point to internal concerns.

Supporting skin health involves the right combination of nutrition, grooming, and parasite control. Omega supplements, vet-approved shampoos, and consistent brushing all contribute to maintaining a healthy coat. Our online store offers a range of skin and coat support products to help you stay ahead of seasonal or chronic issues. Healthy skin isn’t just cosmetic, it’s a key part of your pet’s wellbeing. 🧡

Quote: “The skin is a mirror of internal health.” – Hippocrates

Fun Fact: Skin is the largest organ in a pet’s body.

Top Tip: Sudden coat changes should always be checked by your vet.
