🚨URGENT PLEA: OUR SHELTER IS UNDER THREAT🚨
Not because we’ve failed our animals. But because a handful of voices, armed with false accusations and no evidence, are trying to shut down the only no-kill shelter in the area- due to petty personal vendetta that has nothing to do with our dogs.
For years, The KZN Doghouse, based in Queensburgh, Durban, has been a safe haven for over 800 abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs across KZN. At present we have in our care approximately 80 dogs, most of which we’ve now dispersed due to multiple threats from the residents of Hawk Street, Kharwastan (Ironically, an area in which numerous rescue cases stem from).
We are now housing 46 dogs on the property and are the ONLY NO-KILL SHELTER in Durban South, working tirelessly to give our animals a second chance at life. Not from a government budget or wealthy donor, but self-funded. From the hard work put into fundraising initiatives coupled with our personal salaries.
We uplift dogs who are abused, neglected, stray, abandoned or injured; provide them with medical care, spaying/neutering, vaccines (5-in-1 + rabies); professionally rehabilitate and socialise them with other dogs and families, with the goal of finding them a future forever home. We are not funded. We are not cushioned. Our mission is to responsibly and professionally rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs at any cost…
We’ve helped families who’ve lost everything in floods, disasters, and fires. We’ve worked with SAPS, multiple schools, children’s homes, old age homes, local and women-run businesses. We’ve helped impoverished families with food, water and veterinary care. We continue to work with MULTIPLE local rescue organisations to take in the animals they are unable to accommodate. We feed the forgotten. We heal the broken. We do what others can’t… or won’t.
And now, we are being punished for it.
We are devastated to share that our shelter is now under threat of permanent closure. Investigations have been initiated by Chatsworth Metro police due to unfounded complaints regarding noise and small inconveniences which are typical aspects of running an animal shelter. These complainants have also started campaigning for the closure of our rescue shelter.
If this happens, it means one thing; dozens of healthy, happy, and rehabilitated dogs will be euthanised, for no other reason than being caught in the crossfire of petty human conflict. The complainants have failed to conduct any due diligence, and have done no research to substantiate their baseless accusations. Sadly, their threats are not even directed at the right person.
They have no idea who owns the shelter, what the shelter does for the community, nor have they ever even visited the shelter they continue to make false allegations about.
This is NOT just about dogs. This is about our community.
If we are closed down, who will help?
The allegations we face are that we “violate multiple environmental bylaws”. We place on record that we are zoned correctly. We have been audited by multiple regulatory entities in KZN who all have given feedback that we are compliant .
Environmental sustainability is the forefront of our focus. We have all the expertise, experience and qualifications to operate the organisation we do and we have all the evidence to support this.
We are not the problem. We are part of the solution.
If we are forced to shut our gates, there will be nowhere else for these animals to go. The SPCA is over capacity. Other rescues rely on us. Without The KZN Doghouse, so many innocent lives hang in the balance. Right now, innocent souls sit on our property, unaware that their futures hang by a thread. If we close, they will be euthanised. Not because they’re sick. Not because they’re dangerous. But because there will be nowhere else to go.
We urgently ask the public to rally behind us. We need your voice. Share this post far and wide. Speak up for us. Sign our petition. Come visit us. See the truth. Send a letter of support. MAKE A NOISE!!
This is the only way to save our shelter, by showing that the community supports us and stands by the work we do. This would negate the false accusations of the few residents who claim to represent the whole community.
Stand with us.
Stand with The KZN Doghouse.
Stand with the animals.
