We pride ourselves on being a very proactive & highly motivated branch of the SPCA.

The uMngeni SPCA has been tackling the problems of neglect, abuse and cruelty to animals in the greater Howick Districts since its formation in 1968. Our area of jurisdiction falls within the uMngeni Municipal boundries (with the exception of Otto's Bluff which comes under the Pietermaritzburg SPCA and Nottingham Road which falls under Mooi River SPCA. Our area therefore includes Howick, Hilton, Cedara, Mpophomeni, Haza, Impendle, Dargle, Lidgetton, Balgowan, Karkloof and everything in between.

It is a fun, fresh-air family outing to support animal welfare, packed with entertainment, compassion, and community spirit.

𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱?
You! Everyone! Whether you want to attend with your pet, bring your whole family, or just come out to support a great cause, all are welcome.

𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗜 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗴?
Absolutely. We encourage you to bring your dogs along to enjoy the walk and activities with you. If you do not have a dog you can walk to champion the work of our SPCAs.

By participating, you are helping animals in need. Every step we take together helps support local SPCAs (Mooi River, Pietermaritzburg and uMngeni), one paw at a time!

𝗤𝘂𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 🐾💙

The Islamic religious tradition ”Qurbani“ began yesterday, Thursday 28th May. Observance involves the sacrifice of an animal (sheep, goat, cow, or camel) during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, particularly on Eid al-Adha.

This act of sacrifice is a commemoration of the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail, demonstrating complete submission to God. The meat of the sacrificed animal is then divided into three portions; for the household, relatives and friends and for people in need respectively. The ritual sacrifice focuses on the importance of faith, gratitude, charity, and helping others.

Our role during this time is to ensure that all animals are treated humanely and that the process complies with the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, together with all relevant regulations and codes of practice. It is a demanding period for our inspectors, both physically and emotionally, but one that is important to animal welfare.

During the past three weeks uMngeni SPCAs team was led by Inspector and General Manager Kevin Khumalo who elaborated, “We inspected farms which would supply animals for sacrifice and also several sites where animals will be slaughtered. This was to ensure that all areas were humane in all aspects, with sufficient food, water and space”.

Please keep our inspectors, staff and the animals in your thoughts over the coming days. We truly appreciate the support, kindness, and understanding of our community during this busy time.

URGENT UPDATE ‼️🐱🐶🐾👀
𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗹 - be aware and keep your pets safe. This morning a chocolate Labrador was confiscated from a white adult male trying to sell the animal. It is microchipped and safe at the uMngeni SPCA. The staff is trying to contact the owner.
