We pride ourselves on being a very proactive & highly motivated branch of the SPCA.

The uMngeni SPCA has been tackling the problems of neglect, abuse and cruelty to animals in the greater Howick Districts since its formation in 1968. Our area of jurisdiction falls within the uMngeni Municipal boundries (with the exception of Otto's Bluff which comes under the Pietermaritzburg SPCA and Nottingham Road which falls under Mooi River SPCA. Our area therefore includes Howick, Hilton, Cedara, Mpophomeni, Haza, Impendle, Dargle, Lidgetton, Balgowan, Karkloof and everything in between.

𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹 💔🐾🐶🐕

This is a follow up on the story two weeks ago when we responded to a complaint about multiple dogs on a property. Of the sixteen underweight greyhounds initially counted, when the team returned the following day, there were only five.

However, the conditions were still filthy and the dogs were removed.

Inspector Lee Prins reported, “I felt that, due to the appalling conditions in which they were kept, confiscating the dogs wasn’t enough. I decided to take further action and registered a docket at Howick police station. The law will now take its course and, hopefully, we can get justice for how those dogs were treated and how they were kept.”

The case number has been issued; 173/10/2026.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝗴, 𝗚𝗜𝗚!🐶🐱🐾💙

When Meyrick Bowker Chairman of the Greater Ambers General Interest Group (GIG) Meyrick Bowker invited the uMngeni SPCA to present our story and share our vision to Ambers residents in their state-of-the-art auditorium, we jumped at the opportunity.

The fifty-minute presentation kicked off with a brief history presented by Vice-Chair Vanessa Remmington, which showcased the society’s work since its establishment in 1968.

Through the five-plus decades since then, political, societal and cultural contexts have radically shifted. Local and international conflict continues to economically de-stabilise our collective narrative.

But, two things have never wavered. Our commitment to preventing cruelty to all animals. And the steadfast support from our entire community, both private and commercial, in multiple ways.

Chairperson Monika Holst was followed by General Manager Kevin Khumalo who jointly illustrated the results of the past three years of restructuring and refining the society; our wins and losses, and the strategies we’re deploying and developing to meet the current and future challenges of our very special SPCA.

Thanks, and appreciation to technical whizz Robin Davis, who managed the technology. The audience unexpectedly offered a cash collection, which epitomises the generosity of our entire community.

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗽𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗶 🐶💙🐾

When a call came in about a dog kept on a chain at a property in Mpophomeni our Trainee Inspector set out to investigate.

What he found was troubling: three dogs were tied up, and one had only very dirty water available. One of the dogs was showing obvious signs of distress. He was aggressive, visibly frustrated, and deeply impacted by the restraint.

Rather than just issuing a notice, we spent time speaking with a family member on-site. Our Officer explained the essential welfare needs of the animals, discussed the mental toll that constant chaining takes on a dog, and gave guidance on making sure the property fence was secure enough for them to safely roam free. A formal warning was issued, along with actionable advice.

Four days later, uMngeni SPCA returned for a follow-up visit to discover a remarkable transformation.

All three dogs were off their chains and roaming freely in the yard. Their water was clean and fresh. Most moving of all was the change in the dog who had previously been so distressed. Seeing him free revealed a calm, relieved, and relaxed character.

This is the power of education and intervention in action. Thanks to your ongoing support, our inspectors can be out in the field, turning unacceptable situations into second chances and ensuring animals in our community live safer, happier lives.
