Do you battle to keep your dog's attention?
Does it feel like you are talking to a brick wall sometimes?
Well, I have found if you use something your dog likes (like treats or a ball) to your advantage, your dog will want to do what you want him to do to get that thing he likes.
Shhhh don't tell anyone, it's a secret.

New study published in Animal Cognition found that dogs have a bias towards vowels when understanding human language. This differs from people who have a bias for consonants. In the study 44 dogs were played mispronounced versions of their names, one with the vowels incorrect and one with the consonants incorrect.

Dogs demonstrated a vowel bias rather than a consonant bias, preferring their own name over a vowel-mispronounced version of their name, but not in comparison to a consonant-mispronounced version. It didn't seem to have much of an impact on their understanding if the consonants in their own name were wrong.

This is interesting when thinking about how dogs respond to our vocal commands - it is more important for us to pronounce the vowels well than the consonants. This might not be intuitive because it is the other way around for us humans.

I've actually tried this on my own dog, Maki. If I call him Baki or Raki or Waki, he responds as if I'm calling his name. If I call him Muki or Moki, he doesn't pay as much attention. Does anyone else have similar experiences?

We absolutely love wildlife and conservation of natural areas. As a Kid I frequently visited the wild coast and nature reserves like Mkambathi. We are passionate about protecting these spaces and the wildlife that lives there. Sam, our trusty Belgian Malinois is trained to track humans and we hope that we will be able to help with anti-poaching efforts in the near future!

It is always a good idea to do regular checks on your dog.
Sticking with the theme of dog pain awareness month, we suggest that every evening you check your dogs paws, ears, mouth, body and tail. This will ensure that you notice an issue as soon as it happens and it will get your dog used to being touched and make vet visits easier:)
If your pup isn't happy with being touched all over, have a treat in your one hand and use the other hand to check your pup. This way your pup is being positively reinforced for allowing its body to be touched:)

Here is a little video we did to show you how to do it:)

HDDT K9 Services shows you how to do a quick demonstration on how to do a basic body check on a dog. Checking a dog's mouth, ears, paws, tail and body.

Here is some for you.
Dogs can be trained to to detect cancer and other diseases in humans. Cancerous cells release different metabolic waste products than healthy cells in the human body. Dogs may even be able to sniff out cancer cells simply through smelling someone’s breath.
In one study, dogs were able to correctly identify lung cancer 97% of the time!

How is that for an impressive sniffer!
