Vets drive festive cheer for pets

Bergview Veterinary Hospital and Onrus Veterinary Clinic have launched their second annual Doggie Bags Project to bring comfort, food and hope to animals in need this Christmas. Founded by receptionist Mareli Serfontein after the Santa Shoebox success, the drive supports Wags & Whiskers, Majestic Beast Boerboel Rescue, Dee Anderson Fostering Animals, PAWS and SAWS. Community members can fill Doggie Bags with treats, toys, food or grooming items at clinic stations — last year’s donations even inspired several adoptions.

A farmer near Karwyderskraal found an orphaned Steenbokkie in dire need today. The Bergview Veterinary team assessed him and were relieved to find no injuries. Now, he’s safe in our hospital, getting the nourishment he needs – IV fluids, dextrose, and glucose-enriched goat’s milk. He’s on the mend, and we’re hopeful for his full recovery!

BY SHERRY DALSEN
Onrus Veterinary Clinic

Summer in South Africa means longer walks and outdoor adventures, but rising temperatures and our unique environment bring serious risks for dogs. Four common dangers – bee stings, heat stroke, hot pavements, and snake bites – can quickly turn a fun outing into an emergency. Knowing the signs and how to respond can save your dog's life.
