Have you heard? The vaccine that prevents against Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease is finally here!
Bunnies from 30 days of age can receive their vaccine. It will be boostered annually. This vaccine is safe and effective. Each bunny that is vaccinated will also first receive a full health check. Vaccines will be done on appointment basis only so we can prevent overlap of our lagomorph patients.
For more information please call us on 064 875 9935

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR BUNNY OWNERS

We received confirmation today that the recent outbreak of acute deaths in rabbits in the Western Cape have been linked to *Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD)* .

RHD is a disease caused by a virus (Calicivirus) and this is the first detection of the disease in South Africa. The disease results in a high number of deaths in rabbits and hares.

*A vaccine is currently not available in South Africa.* This increases the importance of biosecurity measures in households with rabbits. Rabbit owners are advised to ensure that their rabbits are secured and must prevent any contact with other rabbits or hares, either directly or indirectly through people or equipment.

The virus seems to be highly resistant and stable, even when exposed to harsh environmental conditions. F10 SC at high concentration (8ml/1L) is advised as a decontaminate.

Contact us with any concerns and if advice is needed. Currently we will only see bunnies on an appointment basis with prior telephonic history to ensure that we don't endanger any of our patients. You can also call Lorainne to order any F10 products you may need.

Bunny owners be aware!

There have been concerning reports about a disease spreading amongst wild and domestic rabbits in the Western Cape and other parts of South Africa. We are still waiting to receive confirmation of the cause from the state vet department.

In the meantime please adhere to the following guidelines and give us a call if you have any concerns.
- Do not buy in/ introduce any rabbits from anywhere
-Do not allow other rabbit owners onto the property
-Do not allow any possible contact with wild hares or rabbits
-Do not touch any rabbits or hares belonging to anyone else
-Use the below disinfectants if contact is necessary or if any equipment is bought second hand:
Effective disinfectants:
Clean off all biological material and then use either:
Bleach mixed at 200ml/ L of water with 10 minutes contact time
Virkon S: 20g powder in 1L water (2% solution), 10 minutes contact time
F10 SC mixed STRONG (same as for parvoviruses): 8ml/L with 30 minutes contact time.

Our practice has been happy to be a part of the virtual spayathon 2022 for HAWS. After sterilizing 5 cats for the Hermanus Animal Welfare earlier this month, we decided to go the extra mile and help with some animals from Stanford as well. This past week we did a spay and a cryptorchid neuter for Stanford Animal Welfare and will be sterilizing a further two animals before the end of the month!

It is not too late to support this worthy cause - HAWS is running a raffle to raise funds and tickets are only R20! Please pop in at our practice before the end of the week to buy a raffle ticket and stand a chance to win some wonderful wine and bubbly!
