Martin Fick, Managing Director of Salem Agribusiness (PTY) Ltd in Grahamstown, South Africa, established Homegrown Practical Aquaponics (HPA) in 2012 as a division of his business with the intention to design, supply and install cost effective, sustainable food production systems in the Southern African region. With a good knowledge of the Sub Saharan conditions, lifestyles and challenges, HPA str

ives to be the leader and preferred supplier of modular aquaponic systems, components and know-how with the goal of empowering people to produce their own healthy food. Gary Burgess joined HPA in October 2013 after a career in establishing large scale commercial aquaponics. We design for and offer support, training and mentorship to clients who have interest in personal, home-use systems or large-scale modular commercial aquaponic operations. HP Aquaponics have designed our systems, training courses, mentorship programmes and the general running of our business with the specific aim of limiting the barriers to entry and maximise return for clients, whether it be food security or economic success. Our models for larger scale commercial oparations employ a modular approach which enables you to grow and build on success.

Brand new batch of Leaders learning how and, more importantly, WHY Optimised Modular Aquaponics systems work.
It's all about Biological Process Flow which is very specific and sequential.
Unless you really understand these processes, Aquaponics will always be a mystery.
But if you get a grasp of the driving forces then you can fly this Dragon.

Winter Aquaponics.
Manage root zone and water temperature for biological stability as a measure for success.
Start at the design stage, and then use proven management techniques that we teach in our courses to hit the balance between excessive expenditure for environmental control, and effective biological function.
It is a science.
And we'll happily share our success with you on our courses.
Become a part of the growing community of sustainable food production folk who have learned how to harness Nature.

For summer cucumbers coming up

Think tomatoes are the only fruit that need pruning? Think again, garden friend! 👩‍🌾✨

Cucumbers are vining machines—and if you let them run wild, you’ll get a tangled mess of leaves, fewer fruits, and a welcome mat for pests and powdery mildew. 😬

Why you should prune your cucumbers:
✅ Better air flow = fewer fungal issues
✅ More energy goes to fruit instead of leaves
✅ Easier to spot and harvest those sneaky cukes
✅ Keeps the vines trained and tidy on trellises

✨ Quick Tip: Snip off the lower leaves, suckers, and any yellowing or overcrowded foliage. Keep 1–2 main vines trained upward, and your cucumbers will thank you with a bumper crop. 💚
