THIS IS NOT A CUTE PUPPY POST.
This is the post nobody wants to read.
Because while you're looking at a photo of a beautiful puppy or kitten and thinking “How adorable”, somewhere else there is an animal giving birth to another litter that nobody wants.
And another.
And another.
South Africa is drowning in unwanted animals.
An estimated 4 MILLION dogs and cats are homeless in South Africa.
Millions! Not just numbers, rather living, breathing animals.
Animals hungry on the streets.
Animals hit by cars.
Animals full of worms and disease.
Animals chained in backyards.
Animals fighting for food.
Animals being abused.
Animals being dumped because someone can't afford another litter.
And animals sitting in shelters while people say, “Someone will adopt them.”
Will they?
Because there aren't enough homes.
There aren't enough rescuers.
There aren't enough shelters.
There isn't enough money.
And there certainly aren't enough people willing to take responsibility for the animals being produced.
Here's the brutal truth....
WE DO NOT HAVE AN ANIMAL SHORTAGE.
We have an ANIMAL OVERPRODUCTION PROBLEM.
FOUR PAWS reports that 100 unsterilised animals and their offspring can potentially become more than 230,000 animals in just four years.
So when someone says, “It's only one litter.”
No.
It's not.
It's the beginning of another chain.
And when someone says “I'll find good homes for them.”
Maybe you will.
But every home you find for that litter is a home that cannot take another animal already waiting in a shelter, on a street or in a rescue.
“My dog deserves to have puppies.”
No.
Your dog doesn't need motherhood.
Your cat doesn't need a litter.
And animals don't need to reproduce for our enjoyment.
They need us to stop creating animals that we cannot guarantee a safe future for.
This is why Steri Squad exists.
We don't want to spend our lives picking up the pieces.
We want to stop the pieces from being created in the first place.
Every animal we sterilise is a litter that doesn't happen. Every litter that doesn't happen is suffering prevented. Every sterilisation is a tiny crack in a massive cycle.
And right now, we desperately need money to keep going.
Because there are thousands of animals out there that need sterilising before they have another litter.
So here's the uncomfortable question, do you want to help save animals after they are suffering? Or do you want to help prevent that suffering from happening at all?
Don't just donate to rescue.
DONATE TO PREVENT.
Don't just share puppies.
Share the message.
Don't tell us you love animals.
Help us make sure there are fewer animals born into a world that doesn't have enough homes for them.
Because sometimes the greatest rescue isn't the animal we save.
It's the thousands of animals we prevent from ever needing to be rescued.
STERILISE.
OR KEEP COUNTING THE DEAD, THE ABANDONED AND THE UNWANTED.
The choice is ours.
